Latina Woman's Poetry + Workshops – sponsored by City and Humanities Program
Where: Lehman College Studio Theater 

ELISABET VELASQUEZ first began performing her poetry at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café and in 2009 earned a spot on the coveted Nuyorican National Slam Team which achieved 4th place in the Nation. Velasquez Poetry explores and promotes feminism, body positivity, sex, love, mental illness, and women's choices through an intersectional lens. Velasquez has performed at Lincoln Center Out Of Doors, Pregones Theatre, Bushwick Starr Theatre, The Bowery Poetry Club, Brooklyn Museum, Museum Of Natural History, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Rutgers University, Williams College, Adelphi University, Pace University, Princeton University, James Madison University, Harvard. University and The Amber Rose Slut Walk 2017. Her work has been featured in TIDAL, NBC, Now This, Huffington Post, Latina Magazine, Vibe Magazine, Muzzle Magazine, Centro Voces and Elephant Journal among others. She is a VONA Alum, 2017 Poets House Fellow. She is the winner of Button Poetry's 2017 Poetry Video Contest and the author of the chapbook PTSD. 

JANI ROSE is a Puerto Rican poet, writer, activist, curator, and educator. Born in El Barrio, raised in the Bronx, and educated in a Manhattan private school, she is a culturally diverse New Yorker. Her passion for poetry began when she was published at the age of 7. At 17, she attended workshops at The New School and began reading at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Though the next decade of her life was dedicated to raising her 4 sons; she continued writing, becoming a Board Member and Fellow of the Acentos Writers Workshops in 2010. Jani Rose's return to performance poetry in 2008, led to a relationship with Capicu Culture, where she is a Board Member, organizer, and blogger for "Sofrito for Your Soul." In 2012 she launched the Sangre Viva Arts Alliance, unifying the large Latino network of activists in NYC. In the Spring of 2014, she co-founded La Sopa: Capicu School of Poetic Arts, hosted at Boricua College in Brooklyn, where she is a student and educator. Jani Rose is a multi-faceted professional who takes to the page and stage to express her love of the art of language and share the Nuyorican experience. 

AMBER PAEZ is an MFA-Poetry candidate at The New School. Her writing focuses on the intersections of culture, language, and identity by examining her own first-generation Latinx roots. She currently is working on her thesis, but has translation projects, critical essays, and book reviews in the works.

Her poems have been published in anthologies such as Florida's Best Emerging Poets 2017 and New York's Best Emerging Poets 2018 as well as in literary magazines such as TEA and Com(m)unícate. She has read her poetry in multiple venues across New York.
