Event Description
WHEN: October 29, 2014, 12:30-2PM
WHERE: Art Department Room FA005
WHO: Herbert R. Broderick, Professor, Art Department
TALK: A Hellenistic Moses in Anglo-Saxon England
OVERVIEW: The talk will be based on my forthcoming book to be published by the University of Notre Dame Press (no date yet for publication) entitled – Moses the Egyptian in the Illustrated Old English Hexateuch (London, British Library Cotton MS Claudius B.iv) – where I demonstrate that Moses is depicted with 10 distinctive attributes in this mid-11th-century Anglo-Saxon manuscript, including the first extant example of Moses shown with “horns,” a motif familiar to many people from Michelangelo’s famous statue of Moses in Rome. The majority of these attributes can be shown to be derived from late Romano/Egyptian art associated with the representation of generals, kings, and priests.
