The Lehman College Community Band will give its final performance of the spring season on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre. Titled “Prelude to Summer,” the concert will feature a mix of popular selections for wind band the entire family can enjoy, including the familiar Overture to Raymond by Ambrose Thomas, First Suite for Band by contemporary composer Alfred Reed, and Percy Grainger’s ever-popular Country Gardens.
The band will also perform a rousing, fast-paced march, appropriately titled In Storm and Sunshine, the dramatic and tuneful Dragoons of Villars, as well as a beautiful arrangement of Amazing Grace, in memory of several band members recently past.
Rounding out the program will be a special performance by the winner of the 2014 Jerome Sala Memorial Competition, alto saxophonist Ashley Dookie from the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music, who will perform Alexander Glazunov’s virtuosic Saxophone Concerto.
Directed by Professor Alan Hollander, the Lehman College Community Band includes Lehman students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members.
