Event Description
Written by Oscar Montero and directed by Marco Antonio Rodriguez, Las Rutas de Julia de Burgos is a one-act play that presents the genius, the personal struggle and the humanity of the acclaimed Puerto Rican writer Julia de Burgos, focusing on powerful emotions—her passion for words, her love for Dominican leader Juan Isidro Jimenez Grullón and her faith in human solidarity and justice.

Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) has become an iconic presence in Latino cultures in New York and throughout the country. When Burgos was honored with a U.S. postage stamp bearing her image, she was called a revolutionary writer, poet and activist. Yet her work as a poet and the power of her personal story are not so well known.
Las rutas de Julia de Burgos celebrates Julia’s 100th birthday by presenting key moments in that story. The play brings to the stage the tensions between Burgos’s powerful use of words and her personal struggles: to see her country free of oppression, to find fulfillment in love, to help her family, to find a place as an exile in New York.Julia de Burgos died on a New York street at the age of 39. Yet the power of her voice increases with every year that passes. Like no other writer of her generation, she speaks powerfully to women but also to anyone willing to defy social conventions to find an inner freedom that is both personal and universal, that connects the intimate self with others and with the world around us. Las rutas de Julia de Burgos presents the power of that freedom and that connection.

Cast members include Sol Marina Crespo, Carlos A. Valencia, Dalia Davi, Sandie Luna, Juan Carlos Diaz, and Yarani Del Valle Pinero.
