Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoo
Start Date: 5/7/2013Start Time: 4:00 PM
End Date: 5/7/2013End Time: 5:00 PM

Event Description:
The English Department and Leonard Lief Library will present a slideshow and discussion of Professor. Margot Mifflin's (English) book Bodies of Subversion. When first released in 1997, the book was the first history of women’s tattoo art, providing a fascinating excursion to a subculture dating back to the 19th century. Newly revised, the book shares the timeline of female tattooing, the impact of reality shows on women’s tattoo culture, as well as therapeutic uses of tattooing for women leaving gangs, prisons, or situations of domestic abuse. Further, it documents 19th century sideshow attractions, Victorian society women who wore tattoos as custom couture, the parallel rise of tattooing and cosmetic surgery during the 1980s, and breast cancer survivors, who tattoo their mastectomy scars as an alternative to reconstructive surgery or prosthetics.
