Los autores darán lectura en voz alta a fragmentos de sus obras (a la venta durante el evento) y hablarán sobre las dinámicas de la actividad literaria en español en Estados Unidos.

The authors will read aloud excerpts from their works (for sale during the event) and will talk about the dynamics of literary activity in Spanish in the United States.

The pulse of literature brings with it both new voices and literary genres that the profession provokes. Thus, the written word celebrates inclusion and diversities in genres such as queer, trans and non-binary literature, written by authors who go beyond literature as an artistic manifestation, bringing their talents together in various disciplines, such as theater and music.

Fifty women writers in various cities in Mexico and the United States come together to write about the stories they experienced during social distancing. Magical space that helps weave the hearts of women who write their pains, joys and ways of seeing a world plagued by uncertainty. Fabric of words that dance to a tune: that of the freedom to feel ourselves, to touch ourselves with our eyes, to cross words, knowledge and feelings, which collapse the silence left by the voracious confinement.

CONVERSATORIO ¿CÓMO CHINGADOS SE USA EL ESPAÑOL?/PANEL DISCUSSION.

Spanish is a rapidly growing language, and although there are more than 600 million Spanish speakers in the world, there are words in Spanish whose meaning varies depending on the country where they are spoken. Therefore, paraphrasing the Colombian writer Daniel Samper, what we seek is for our language to be like love: "purity is not required, but hygiene."

CEREMONIA CLAUSURA/CLOSING CEREMONY

The fourth edition of the New York City International Book Fair (FILNYC), is decisive for the event, not only because it marks the return of the community of authors, readers and publishers to the face-to-face routine and encourages interaction between them, but also for having set a precedent of convergence between the word, spoken or written in Spanish, whose place of enunciation is New York, a restless, plural and diverse city, from which we read and write as Spanish speakers.

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM Prof. Maurice Vann on Evolving Definitions of Masculinity Among Black Men in Baltimore

The Women’s & Gender Studies Program is hosting its 2nd lecture presentation with

Dr. Maurice Vann
Assistant Professor in the Social Work Department

Who will give a talk on

Evolving Definitions of Masculinity Among Black Men in Baltimore, Maryland

The Freddie Gray Uprising of 2015 gave some Black men who had previously been incarcerated the opportunity to redefine their manhood and masculinity. My upcoming book in part investigates the re-definition of masculinity/maleness among Black men returning to their communities’ post-incarceration. Men in my study described the need to “Man ‘Up and be accountable” for the harms they had committed in their communities and to the women in their lives. My analysis of my research interviews in part relies on the notion of change provided by bell hooks in her book, “The Will to Change Men, Masculinity, and Love”.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Reading with Christopher Bonastia: The Battle Nearer to Home: The Persistence of School Segregation in New York City

Despite its image as an epicenter of progressive social policy, New York City continues to have one of the nation's most segregated school systems. Tracing the quest for integration in education from the mid-1950s to the present, The Battle Nearer to Home follows the tireless efforts by educational activists to dismantle the deep racial and socioeconomic inequalities that segregation reinforces. In excavating the history of New York City school integration politics, in the halls of power and on the ground, Christopher Bonastia unearths the enduring white resistance to integration and the severe costs paid by Black and Latino students. This last decade has seen activists renew the fight for integration, but the war is still far from won.

Christopher Bonastia is Professor of Sociology and Chair of the department at Lehman College.

“Second-Generation Africans and the Redefining of Blackness in America”

The Black population in the United States is undergoing a significant transformation. Over the last four decades, the African immigrant population has increased from 130,000 to 2 million, making them one of the fastest growing groups in the United States. This talk explores how these demographic realities are experienced in young people’s daily lives. The presentation draws on ethnographic observations and interviews with second-generation West African teenagers in New York City to understand how processes of immigrant integration and racialization unfold generationally, across racial and ethnic lines.

3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Lehman College International Feast of Thanks

The Lehman student government organization will host an event for fellow students to celebrate international students day by paying homage to their cultural background and lifestyle. This will boost student morale, provide a safe space for students and allow them to actively engage with other cultural experiences. Activities include music, a variety of internationally culturally themed food and live dance performances, and goodie bags. In addition, we will celebrate Thanksgiving with traditional dinner foods.

Students are encouraged and should feel open to consulting the student government if they plan to do a dance and/or singing performance consisting of cultural themes and music during the event to gain access to song/playlist requests for the DJ. (Note: please confirm your interest in performing individually or in a group by contacting the Lehman student governments Andre Thompson-Technology and Design Officer (Host), Sanjay Ramsundar-Senator (Co-host), Yamiletl Martinez Mena- Mexican Student Society (MSS) President (Co-host), or Tina Nguyen-Events Coordinator.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Reading with Mark Christian: Booker T. Washington: A Life in American History

Booker T. Washington was an integral figure in mid-19th to early-20th century America who successfully transitioned from a life in slavery and poverty to a position among the Black elite. This book highlights Washington's often overlooked contributions to the African and African American experience, particularly his support of higher education for Black students through fundraising for Fisk and Howard universities, where he served as a trustee. A vocal advocate of vocational and liberal arts alike, Washington eventually founded his own school, the Tuskegee Institute, with a well-rounded curriculum to expand opportunities and encourage free thinking for Black students. While Washington was sometimes viewed as a "great accommodator" by his critics for working alongside wealthy, white elites, he quietly advocated for Black teachers and students as well as for desegregation. This book will offer readers a clearly written, fully realized overview of Booker T. Washington and his legacy.
