Start Date: 9/28/2016Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 9/28/2016End Time: 2:00 PM

Event Description:
Professor Alexandra Coller, an assistant professor in the Department of Languages & Literatures, will present on "Transgression and Textual Performance: Margherita Costa (c.1600-c.1664) and the Italian Baroque." Margherita Costa, poet, virtuosa, and Roman courtesan is arguably the most prolific secular woman writer of the early modern world. This lecture investigates some of her published work while it seeks to situate her within the context of the Baroque period. Costa traveled and wrote over a period of more than twenty years across the European continent. Her dedications provide testimony of her illustrious entourage at the courts of the Medici in Florence, the Barberini in Rome, the French Queen in Paris, and the Savoy in Turin. Professor Coller's talk is part of the Women's Studies Fall Lecture Series.
