Women's and Gender Studies Presents: Alyshia Galvez on "What are you reading? A presentation on citational politics"
Start Date: 9/16/2020Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 9/16/2020End Time: 1:45 PM

Event Description:

BlackLivesMatter, #SayHerName, #MeToo, #NiUnaMas. In recent years, and especially in 2020, we’ve seen massive mobilizations in the Americas calling for respect and care for groups too long structurally disadvantaged and too often harmed. How do these movements, their organizers and their ideas, show up in our classrooms? Do they? If we are interested in pursuing a more just world, how does our work in the classroom relate to that aim? In this talk, Prof. Alyshia Gálvez (Latin American and Latino Studies) will discuss citational politics: who we read and why it matters. The talk will help students and faculty think through the work we do in the classroom: who is on our syllabus and who is not? What are we writing and why? Whose ideas are left out of our thinking and how can we adjust our practice to reduce those omissions?
