Being LGBTQ at Lehman: A World Café Conversation

Following the suicide of an LGBTQ-identified Lehman College student in 2018, a group of faculty, staff, administrators and students have been meeting to discuss ways to ensure a safe and affirming campus for our LGBTQ members.

As a result, Lehman College will host a campus-wide discussion in a World Café format to which all College community members are invited. Learn more about the World Café discussion format here: http://www.theworldcafe.com/key-concepts-resources/world-cafe-method/.
The purpose of the discussion is two-fold:  1) to identify specific needs of LGBTQ community members and ways to address them; and 2) to energize the Lehman Community to build a safe and affirming campus for LGBTQ community members.

What attendees can expect: According to the Art of Hosing (artofhosting.org), the World Café got its name because it imitates a café setting where small groups (4 or 5 people) are all conversing together around tables.  In this case, a cluster of small groups – anywhere from 10 to 1000 – are in conversation about an issue that matters to them or some work they are trying to do together.  It is an ideal way to find out what a community is thinking and feeling about a topic.  After the first conversation, someone stays at the table as ‘host’, while the others move to a new table, taking their previous conversations with them. In this way, the threads of the various conversations are woven together and all of us get a sense of what is being discovered and developed between us

From the first page, Winslow establishes an uncanny authority and profound tone that belie the book’s debut status. The precision and charm of his language lure us in and soothe us…He paints a community so tightknit and thorough it becomes easy to forget the people in it don’t exist… Much of the story is told through dialogue, rich and truthful conversations among characters reminiscent of those in August Wilson’s plays, expressing so much more than what is on the surface." - The New York Times Book Review

"This debut novel flits from 1941 to 1987 charting the life of Knot, a smart, obstinate woman in her twenties who teaches school in a mostly African-American town in North Carolina…The town is full of secrets, and the novel rollicks through revelations of true parentage and hidden lives." - The New Yorker

"Winslow’s quietly glorious novel is dedicated “To the reader,” and it engages on a level that’s appropriately intimate… In this tiny, deeply interwoven community, friends are more like siblings, siblings compete for the same lovers, babies given up for adoption don’t land far from their birth home, and everyone has a stake in shared secrets – sometimes handed down, sometimes withheld – across generations." - Boston Globe

Hispanic Heritage: Book Talk "Mexican Consular Diplomacy in the Times of Trump"
Diplomacia consular Mexicana en tiempos de Trump aims to fill the void in academic literature about the concept of consular diplomacy. Indeed, there is no related bibliography because it is a concept that has been developed through a very particular practice: the consular activity deployed by Mexico in the United States.

Speakers:

Alexandra Delano, associate professor of Global Studies at New School
Rafael Laveaga, director of Sección Consular de la Embajada de México in Washington DC
Diego Gómez Pickering, diplomat, journalism, and writer. Former Cónsul General de México en Nueva York 2016-2018.

Book Reading: Manhattan Tropics by Bret Maney and Cristina Perez Jimenez

Equal parts a work of New York immigrant literature, coming of age story, and important historical document, Manhattan Tropics is a cornerstone of New York Latinx literature.  The first-ever English translation of this foundational work by J. Bret Maney artfully captures the style and spirit of the original Spanish.  The book is published by Arte Público Press.

J. Bret Maney is Assistant Professor of English at Lehman College.

Cristina Pérez Jiménez is Assistant Professor of English at Manhattan College.

Hispanic Heritage: Reading of Manhattan Tropics
Manhattan Tropics/ Trópico en Manhattan is a bilingual scholarly edition of Guillermo Cotto-Thorner's 1951 novel, with translator Professor Bret Maney (Department of English), and co-editor with Cristina Pérez Jiménez, a professor of English at Manhattan College, in nearby Riverdale.

As the first novel of the Puerto Rican mass migration to New York City, Manhattan Tropics is a foundational work of Latinx literature that has never before been translated into English. Closer to our own institutional home, part of the novel is set in the South Bronx. The book was published by Arte Público Press (based at the University of Houston) in its "Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Series" in April 2019.

Women's Studies Program Fall Lecture: "Powerless Women?"
The Women's Studies Program presents the First Fall Lecture Series entitled "Powerless Women? Italian Emigration and the Perseverance of the Women who Remained Behind" by Victoria Calabrese, Ph. D., Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of History, on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm in Carman Hall, Room 221.

This paper will discuss the Italian women who remained behind the great wave of emigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and how they coped with being left on their own.  During this period married women had few rights, relied on their husbands for financial support, and were not authorized to obtain a passport without marital permission.  These restrictions left women legally powerless if their husbands were gone for a long time or never returned.  Some of these women petitioned the local mayor's office, requesting government searches for their husbands abroad.  Using these petitions, this paper will show how women reacted to their situations and demonstrate that abandoned women did not idly sit by and wait for their husbands to return.

Double Dads One Teen

A Queer Family’s Trailblazing Life

in the USA and Taiwan

by Stuart F. Chen-Hayes

Stuart Chen-Hayes
offers a personal story about his 25-year loving relationship with his husband, Lance Chen-Hayes.  He describes their journey in the United States and Taiwan as they build their family and encounter multiple legal barriers, including basic health care rights, legal marriage, and marriage equality.

As they experience schools both affirming and problematic for a two-generation gay family, they address their experience as gay fathers to a gay teen.

Stuart Chen-Hayes is Professor and Program Coordinator of Lehman College’s School Counseling Program.

The New York Latin American Art Triennial 2019: Progressive Transition
Progressive Transition explores the action and effect of moving from one state to another.  More broadly, the project shows the drive towards transformation in the arts. The artists’ need to “feel part of something” that can likewise be recognized and defined by others will be explored within the exhibition. The work on view represents the artistic transition seen against a landscape of societal progress. The project highlights cultural exchange and, at its core, examines the implications of transition on an evolving Latin American culture.

Guided tours of the tree-lined, 37-acre campus will leave from the dramatic Marcel Breuer-designed Lehman College Art Gallery. While you're at the Art Gallery, explore the new exhibition Progressive Transition: The New York Latin American Art Triennial 2019. The installation explores the action and effect of moving from one state to another. More broadly, the project shows the drive toward transformation in the arts. The artists' need to feel part of something that can likewise be recognized and defined by others will be explored within the exhibition.

The Women's Studies Program Second Fall Lecture Series Presentation
The Women's Studies Program Second Fall Lecture Series presents "Not Dead Yet: Lydia Ginzburg, Hitler, Stalin and Russian Structuralism" by Dr. Karin Beck, Associate Dean, School of Arts & Humanities and Dept. of Laguages and and Literatures. From September, 1941 to January, 1944, Leningrad was under siege by the German Army.  In her fictional memoirs of this time, the writer and literary critic Lydia Ginzburg (1902-1990), shows how despite the grueling brutality of the siege, the citizens of Leningrad kept their sense of humanity by continually remembering their culture, especially their literary heritage.
The talk will introduce the person Lydia Ginzburg, who defied both Hitler and Stalin and has almost been forgotten by literary history because she did not fit into dominant patterns and expectations.

Journalist as Witness and Historian with Ed Morales

Ed Morales of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and Columbia University Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race will discuss his newest book Fantasy Island: Colonialism, Exploitation, And The Betrayal of Puerto Rico.

LOCATION: Lehman Multimedia Center/ Carman Hall Studio C (downstairs)

Ed Morales is a veteran journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Newsday, The Village Voice, The Miami Herald, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, The Nation and the Los Angeles Times.

Drawing on a deep body of knowledge accrued over decades of critical reporting on the experience of Puerto Ricans in New York and the relationship between the island and the U.S., Mr. Morales' latest book,
Fantasy Island: Colonialism, Exploitation, And The Betrayal of Puerto Rico tells an up to the minute story with roots 100 years old.

Want to understand what the summer's dancing protests against Puerto Rican Governor Ricky Rosselló were all about? Wonder how the Trump administration's response to Hurricane Maria fits into history? Confused about what's true and who tells the truth? Curious how reporters' own politics and viewpoints effect what they see and say? Want to understand reporters' role in creating the first draft of history? Come to this conversation.

Film Screening: Toni Morrison—The Pieces I am

The Department of Africana Studies will present a special screening of the film Toni Morrison—The Pieces I Am. The screening is part of the department's #Africana@50 event series, which will continue throughout the year with lectures and performances.

The film is an artful and uplifting documentary on the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel prize-winner.  It was directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, a friend of Toni Morrison’s for over 35 years, the film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own work.

Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed novels, including “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

In addition to Ms. Morrison, the documentary features interviews with Angela Davis, Hilton Als, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez, Farah Griffin, and Oprah Winfrey, who turned Morrison’s novel “Beloved” into a feature film.

The Women's Studies Program Third Fall Lecture Series Presentation
The Women's Studies Program Third Fall Lecture Series presents "Joan Miller's Choreographies of Black Study at Lehman College" by Charmian Wells, Ph.D., Adjunct Assistant Professor, Dept. of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance. This talk will examine Joan Miller's signature solos, Pass Fe White (1970) and Homestretch  (1972), in the context of her work establishing the dance program at Lehman College (1970) and within the 1960/70s' student movements more broadly.  The solos "read" the desire to embody idealized, feminine whiteness in a critique of structures for accessing national belonging: marriage, celebrity, and education.  Performing her choreography as a form of black study (Moten and Harney 2013), Miller's work affirmed the capacity to desire differently, provoking considerations of other terms for be(long)ing in the world.

The Women's Studies Program Fourth Fall Lecture Series Presentation
The Women's Studies Program Fourth Fall Lecture Series presents "Gender and Maintenance: Chinese Temple Practice in the Nineteenth Century" by William C. Wooldridge, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of History.
Chinese religious practices centered around temples: physical structures that offered proximity to gods as well as space for communal activities.  Yet temples required maintenance; their terracotta could snap or crumble, their rafters crack or collapse; their walls degrade or tumble.  Temple leaders often described repairs as a means of honoring the gods housed in the temple.  Because maintenance involved designated activities at regular intervals, ultimately to benefit gods, maintenance often overlapped with ritual.  Using stele inscriptions, temple records and archives from several sites in nineteenth-century China, this paper uses maintenance as a way to show how men and women interacted to create temple community.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

“What fools these mortals be!”

Lehman's Theatre and Dance Program will stage a production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, an iconic comedy of love both sought and unsought, where the mortal and supernatural collide, combine, and connect for amorous adventures.

This multimedia production features a cast of nine performers in over 20 different roles. The production focuses on the notion of dreams and transformation of characters as they move from the worlds of working class craftspeople, a Duke and Duchess's court that is rooted in Greek and Amazonian mythology, and the world of the “Fairies” whose very existence is both magical and fantastical.

The audience will get to see what usually takes place behind the scenes. The actors, who have been preparing for the past three months, take on multiple roles and have been working in the physical performance training style of Jacques Lecoq. Through movement and voice transformations, audiences will see the “translation” of one character to the next in real time. In the Elizabethan vein our actors not only transform characters, but gender roles and examine the very nature of what we call “male” and “female,” as we see that love truly is in the eye (and imagination) of the beholder.

This production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream welcomes the audience into a theatrical dreamscape that embraces the magic of what live theatre does best: letting us enter a world that has its own rules and realities like dreams; like love itself.
