11:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Reading with Margot Mifflin: Looking for Miss America: A Pageant’s 100-Year Quest to Define Womanhood
Looking for Miss America is the first feminist history of the Miss America pageant. From its start in 1921 as an Atlantic City tourist draw to its current incarnation as a scholarship competition, the pageant has indexed women’s status during periods of social change–the post-suffrage 1920s, the Eisenhower 1950s, the #MeToo era. This ever-changing institution has been shaped by war, evangelism, the rise of television and reality TV, and, significantly, by contestants who confounded expectations.
Spotlighting individuals, from Yolande Betbeze, whose refusal to pose in swimsuits led an angry sponsor to launch the rival Miss USA contest, to the first black winner, Vanessa Williams, who received death threats and was protected by sharpshooters in her hometown parade, Mifflin shows how women made hard bargains even as they used the pageant for economic advancement. The pageant’s history includes, crucially, those it excluded; the notorious Rule Seven, which required contestants to be “of the white race,” was retired in the 1950s, but no women of color were crowned until the 1980s. Written in deeply researched, fast-paced chapters that unpack each decade of the competition, Looking for Miss America examines the heady blend of capitalism, patriotism, class anxiety, and cultural mythology that has fueled this American ritual. | Leonard Lief Library |

12:00 AM | Documentary: Fandango at the Wall
HBO Documentary
FREE Film Screening for the community of the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute
Follows Multi Grammy Award winners Arturo O’Farrill and Kabir Sehgal, as they prepare to record a live album at the U.S.-Mexico border wall. The project is inspired by the annual Fandango Fronterizo Festival, which unites people on both sides of the Tijuana-San Diego border. This festival features son jarocho, a 300-year-old folk music tradition. Before recording, festival organizer, Jorge Francisco Castillo, takes O’Farrill and Sehgal on a tour of Veracruz, Mexico, where this musical mixture of indigenous, Spanish, and African traditions originated. As they travel, they meet legendary son jarocho musicians and recruit participants for the upcoming festival. Their travels culminate with the annual celebration, promoting peace and celebrating unity.
From executive producers, Quincy Jones, Andrew Young, and Carlos Santana, the film introduces the beautiful music of the region through intimate interviews and captivating concert footage. Directed by Varda Bar-Kar.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM | Reading with Melissa Castillo Planas: A Mexican State of Mind: New York City and the New Borderlands of Culture A Mexican State of Mind: New York City and the New Borderlands of Culture explores the cultural and creative lives of the largely young undocumented Mexican population in New York City since September 11, 2001. Inspired by a dialogue between the landmark works of Paul Gilroy and Gloria Anzaldúa, it develops a new analytic framework, the Atlantic Borderlands, which bridges Mexican diasporic experiences in New York City and the black diaspora, not as a comparison but in recognition that colonialism, interracial and interethnic contact through trade, migration, and slavery are connected via capitalist economies and technological developments. This book is based on ten years of fieldwork in New York City, with members of a vibrant community of young Mexican migrants who coexist and interact with people from all over the world. It focuses on youth culture including hip hop, graffiti, muralism, labor activism, arts entrepreneurship and collective making.

10:00 AM | Updates on COVID-19: What the Virus Tells Us About Immune Response, Treatment and Vaccine Development Since March, biologists have been racing to learn more about COVID-19 and the new coronavirus that causes it. What have they learned? What is left to be discovered? As we head into fall and a possible “second wave,” hear from two expert biologists, professors from the Lehman College Department of Biology, who will explain the biology of a virus, what makes coronaviruses unique among them; what scientists have learned about “long haulers”–those with immune responses associated with chronic coronavirus infections; and virus detection, treatment and vaccine development.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Reading with Timothy Alborn: All That Glittered Britain's Most Precious Metal from Adam Smith to the Gold Rush From the early eighteenth century into the 1830s, Great Britain was the only major country in the world to adopt gold as the sole basis of its currency, in the process absorbing much of the world’s supply of that metal into its pockets, cupboards, and coffers. During the same period, Britons forged a nation by distilling a heady brew of Protestantism, commerce, and military might, while preserving important features of its older social hierarchy. All That Glittered argues for a close connection between these occurrences, by linking justifications for gold’s role in British society—starting in the 1750s and running through the mid-nineteenth century gold rushes in California and Australia—to contemporary descriptions of that metal’s varied values at home and abroad. Most of these accounts attributed British commercial and military success to a credit economy pinned on gold, stigmatized southern European and subaltern peoples for their nonmonetary uses of gold, or tried to marginalize people at home for similar forms of alleged misconduct. This book tells a primarily cultural origin story about the gold standard’s emergence after 1850 as an international monetary system, while providing a new window on British exceptionalism during the previous century.
