A Centennial Celebration of Aimé Césaire
Start Date: 10/3/2013Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Date: 10/3/2013End Time: 6:00 PM
Event Description:
As part of CUNY's two-day celebration of the centennial of the Martinican poet and statesman Aimé Césaire, Lehman College presents an afternoon program featuring:
  • "L'ami fondamental", Euzhan Palcy's 2006 documentary featuring the elderly poets of the Négritude movement, Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906-2001) and Aimé Césaire (1913-2008). Filmed in 1993, this short (18-minute) documentary records their last interview together, and traces a friendship – and its political and poetic trajectory – that lasted over 65 years.
  • "Global Césaire," a panel of experts speaking of Césaire's lasting legacy. Including scholars from Lehman – Prof. Ghelawdewos Araia and Prof. Milagros Ricourt – as well as Prof. Françoise Naudillon from Concordia University and Prof. Nick Nesbitt from Princeton.
  • A poetic interlude, featuring texts by Césaire, and the special appearance of the Chadian poet, novelist and essayist, Nimrod.

This event is sponsored by the departments of African and African-American Studies, Latin-American, Latino, and Puerto Rican Studies, and Languages and Literatures.
