Event Description:

Lehman College Writing Across the Curriculum Announces:

Anti-Racism
and
Radical Care Across the Curriculum: Activism in the  Classroom, Scholarship, and the Institution

A 2-Part Workshop Series

Facilitated by Sophia Hsu, PhD and Sarah Ohmer, PhD

APPLICATIONS DUE APRIL 11, 2021

  • How have the past year’s events affected your teaching, scholarship, and self-care practices?
  •
  • How does anti-racism, self-care, pleasure activism, and Black joy shape your teaching and/or scholarship?

  • How do you sustain or embark in activist scholarship and writing pedagogy in public higher education?

Day 1: April 30, 2021, 10am-1pm

Vulnerability and Compassion in Activist Scholarship and    Writing Pedagogy

How do we create life-giving spaces in the midst of a global pandemic and social injustice? How do vulnerability and compassion help to sustain activist scholarship and writing pedagogy in public higher education? Participants will identify concrete sites of anti-racist action in our day-to-day environments, academic or otherwise, and practice self-reflective writing (in part with the goal of preparing to engage our students in these same practices). We will share practices and projects we are developing in the midst of a global pandemic,
white supremacy, homophobia, and transphobia, and discuss sustainable implementation. Dedicated quiet writing time will helpparticipants to move forward on current anti-racist projects.

Day 2: May 14, 2021, 10am-1pm Putting Anti-Racist Dreams in Practice

What are our dream visions for higher education, scholarship, teaching, and institutional environments? What resources do we need to make our dream work happen? Participants will expand on the ideas and projects they worked on in the previous session and engage in strategic planning to realize future ideas and projects. We will practice setting realistic and measurable goals in alignment with our personal and professional needs. Dedicated
quiet writing time will help participants to move forward on current anti-racist projects, and to set concrete steps for the summer and the following academic year
.

A small stipend will be offered to all participants.

All current Lehman College faculty members are welcome to apply. Applicants must commit to attending all twoworkshops. Due to the limited budget, we will prioritize applications that show demonstrated engagement in and/or specific ideas for developing projects or curricula that reference people of color’s scholarship and activism, focused on topics of anti-racism, intersectionality, social justice, and/or restorative justice.

To send an application, use the link in the flyer.

Priority deadline: April 11, 2021
