Barbara Jacobson Memorial Service
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

The Department of Sociology invites you to join us for a celebration of the life of Barbara Jacobson.

Barbara Jacobson was born in 1939. She graduated from DePauw University in 1961. Two years later, she received an M.A. in Sociology of Religion from Yale Divinity School.  She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University in 1970 and soon after, joined the faculty in the Department of Sociology. Barbara's tenure at Lehman spanned 44 years. Her vibrant presence on campus will be greatly missed.

Barbara’s research focused on education and social mobility. She worked on major datasets related to the experiences of students at CUNY.  Her articles include, “Education and Mobility: From Achievement to Ascription” in American Sociological Review and “Education: Social Fact of Social Process?” in The American Behavioral Scientist.

At Lehman, Barbara was best known for her passion for the liberal arts and her work as the Chairperson of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.  Her encyclopedic knowledge of curricular procedures, the care she took working with departments as they developed their courses and curricula, and her support for general education profoundly influenced the experiences of generations of Lehman students.  She was also a mainstay of Lehman's Phi Beta Kappa chapter, every year reviewing hundreds of transcripts to find eligible students, and at times, reaching out to personally counsel students about eligibility requirements. Additionally, Barbara served on many campus-wide committees and task forces, most recently including the Writing Across the Curriculum Advisory Committee and the Transfer Council.

In her life outside of academia, Barbara enjoyed traveling, gardening, following politics avidly, and spending time with friends and family.

“Women Writers and the Canon:Valeria Miani and Isabetta Coreglia”
12:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Alexandra Coller (Assistant Professor, Department of  Languages and Literatures) investigates two newly rediscovered female-authored pastoral dramas, forthcoming in The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe Series (Toronto), edited and translated by Alexandra Coller: Valeria Miani’s Amorosa speranza (Venice: Francesco Bolzetta, 1604), and Isabetta Coreglia, La Dori (Naples: Gio. Domenico Montanaro, 1634). The plays will be analyzed within the context of pastoral drama, that is, the canonical production of Torquato Tasso’s Aminta (1581) and Giovanni Battista Guarini’s Pastor fido (1589), the less well-known examples of Francesco Bracciolini, Francesco Contarini, and Muzio Manfredi, as well as against the backdrop of the more widely acclaimed pastorals of Isabella Andreini [Mirtilla, 1588], Maddalena Campiglia [Flori, 1588], and Barbara Torelli [Partenia, ms., comp. c. 1587].

As such, Miani’s and Coreglia’s early seventeenth-century plays attest to what Coller describes as the “fourth” generation of pastoral dramatic writing in Italy and the “second” generation of female-authored pastoral drama on the continent.

What can these female-authored dramatic works teach us about imitative and revisionist practices, the “negotiation” between canonical and non-canonical texts, as well as their own claims to originality?

Global Citizenship Gala
6:00 PM

The Office of Community Engagement and New Student Programs at Herbert H. Lehman College is proud to announce our First Global Citizenship Gala. The gala will take place at the Villa Barone Manor on May 1, at 6 p.m. and it is to benefit Community Service-Learning & the Lehman L.I.F.E. Alternative Break Program.

We would like to invite you to join us in support of our remarkable students who spend their spring and summer breaks volunteering in partnership with grassroots leaders around the world. Lehman L.I.F.E. (Leaders Involved For Everyone) supports service opportunities for Lehman College students by creating an awareness of need in communities around the world and fostering action through volunteer work. Our main goal is to increase awareness of issues affecting humanity from our campus to the global society.

This year, our students will partner with the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and Students Helping Honduras in El Progreso, Honduras. Lehman students must raise 100% of their program fees, volunteer for at least 25 hours in our very own community, learn grassroots fundraising techniques and attend weekly community development trainings. The expectation is that the cycle will continue as students bring their experiences back here to New York City.

Please consider the options on our gala website (www.lehman.edu/lehmanlife) when choosing to support our First Annual Global Citizenship Gala. All ad options include selected journal ad, digital recognition during cocktail hour and logo on gala website.
