Spring Lecture Series
The Mahogany Paradox: African-American/Black WomenExperiencing Admiration/Sexualization while Learning Abroad in Italy
Nicholas Boston, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Journalism & Media Studies
This talk presents a case study that addresses African American Black women's experiences of negotiating excessive admiration/sexualization while studying abroad in Italy, between 2013 and 2022. The talk relates anecdotal, autoethnographic information to scholarly findings and journalistic reports. The talk argues that open discussion ofparticipants' experiences of racialization, sexualization, gendering and so forth, whether framed as positive, negative or neutral, raises administrators' and faculty's awareness, encouraging or further equipping them to take an intentionally intersectional approach to the design and management of international learning programs.
