Planning for Finals 4/3

Alexandra Coller Reading
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Alexandra Coller, associate professor of Languages and Literature, will give a special reading from her book, Women, Rhetoric, and Drama in Early Modern Italy.

Sixteenth-century Italy witnessed the rebirth of comedy, tragedy, and tragicomedy in the pastoral mode. In her book, Coller suggests that all three genres were, in fact, remarkably new - if dramatists’ intriguingly sympathetic portrayals of and sustained investment in women as vibrant and dynamic characters of the early modern stage are taken into account.

This study examines the role of rhetoric and gender in early modern Italian drama, in itself and in order to explore its complex interrelationship with the rise of women writers and the role women played in Italian culture and society - while at the same time demonstrating how closely intertwined history, culture, and dramatic writing are.

Reading: Elhum Haghighat
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The Middle East and North Africa have recently experienced one of the highest population growth rates in the world, which has profoundly affected the wider region and its institutions. In addition, the recent period of unprecedented political turbulence has further complicated the picture, resulting in uprisings and resistance movements that have coincided with intense shifts in socio-cultural norms, as well as economic and political change.

The complexity of these changes is further explained in the context of demographic transitions [mortality, fertility, migration] that work in concert with development [economic and social modernization] and ultimately, democratization [political modernization]. These three Ds [Demographic, Development, and Democratic transitions] are central to Elhum Haghighat's analysis of the Middle East and North Africa at this crucial time.

Elhum Haghighat is Professor and Chair of Political Science at Lehman College.

Global Warming Demystified

Do you have questions about the science or reality of global warming?
This presentation by noted educator Jeffrey Bennett should answer them,
while showing that the solutions to this important problem are ones that
people of all political persuasions can agree on. Ideal for college students in all
majors, this talk draws from Dr. Bennett’s book A Global Warming Primer.

Astrophysicist/author Jeffrey Bennett, winner of the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award, has been teaching about global warming for more than 30 years. He is the lead author of college textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, of six critically acclaimed books for the general public,  and of a children’s series selected as the first books to be read aloud from the International Space Station for “Story Time From Space.”

“Dr. Bennett’s careful question-by-question presentation will lead any fair-minded person to see the warming issue more clearly.”  — Hon. George P. Shultz, Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan

The Race Between Education and Catastrophe

In 1920, H.G. Wells wrote: “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” Perhaps no other quote better sums up why teaching is so important, and why so many of us focus our lives on promoting education. In this talk, Dr. Jeff Bennett (CU Boulder) will discuss a few strategies, with examples, that can help us “win” this race by improving our teaching success at almost any level in any field, and especially for the teaching of math and science.

Jeff Bennett (Ph.D., Astrophysics, U. Colorado) has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, and is now a full-time writer/speaker/educator focusing on student and public understanding of math and science. He is the lead author of best-selling college textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics; of six books for children that have all been read by astronauts from the International Space Station; and of critically acclaimed books for the public on topics including science teaching, Einstein’s theory of relativity, and global warming. Dr. Bennett has also served as a Visiting Senior Scientist at NASA Headquarters, where he led efforts to forge stronger links between the research and education communities, he proposed and co-led development of the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and he led creation of the free app “Totality” for solar eclipses. His personal web site is www.JeffreyBennett.com.
