12:30 PM - 2:00 PM Women Take More Ownership: The Feminization of Parental Engagement Labor in NYC Schools

Women’s & Gender Studies / Lehman College-CUNY

Spring Lecture Series

“Women Take More Ownership: The Feminization ofParental

Engagement Labor in NYC Schools

Alyssa Lyons, PhD

Lecturer/Advisor, Sociology Department

How do we understand and define what it means to be an "engaged parent" in schools? Why do we understand parental engagement in the ways that we do? In the perennial quest to address educational inequality in the U.S., parental engagement has too often functioned as a diversionary and futile mitigation tool against inherently oppressive anti-black settler colonial schooling. In this talk, we’ll unpack the social construct of parental engagement to explore the gendering and feminization of parental engagement labor in NYC elementary and middle schools. Through the eyes of both teachers and parents, we’ll deconstruct parental engagement at the nexus of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation to better understand how parental engagement isn't part of the solution to educational injustice--but instead, part of the problem.
