Women's Studies: "German Nuptial Music in the Seventeenth Century: Sound in the Service of the Social Imaginary"

The Women’s Studies Program/Lehman College - CUNY

Spring Lecture Series

“German Nuptial Music in the Seventeenth Century: Sound in the Service of the Social Imaginary”

Janette Tilley, Ph.D.

Associate Professor/ Musicology Chair, Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance

In the century and a half after the Protestant Reformation, German pastors and civic authorities worked to elevate marriage as the ideal state. Among the most popular biblical texts to which they pointed in order to lend scriptural authority to their argument was the Song of Songs. With its ardent and evocative imagery, the Song of Songs was also one of the most popular sources of texts for wedding music. How did early modern wedding music participate in advancing the marriage cause? And how did theological interpretations of the book challenge listeners to hear this libidinous text with ears focused not on the secular, but the eternal?  This study looks at practices and regulations of wedding music in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries to trace important shifts in the Protestant marriage project.

NYCWP Teachers in the Round Conference

This spring, the NYCWP invites you to join Teachers in the Round, a day of sharing innovative practices and classroom resources around reading and writing. Through a roundtable format of presentation and open discussion, you will be able to explore topics such as writing for social justice, learning in online spaces, and celebrating student voice.  Come see how you can turn ideas into a practical reality for your classroom.

Our keynote speaker for the conference will be Nicole Mirra, Assistant Professor of Urban Teacher Education at Rutgers University. Her recent publication Educatingfor Empathy: Literacy Learning and Civic Engagement (Teachers College Press 2018) offers compelling framework for thinking about literacy education in a politically polarized world.

Stay tuned for NYCWP’s 41st Annual Teacher to Teacher Conference on October 19, 2019.

“Writing and thriving in Irish: novelist Anna Heussaff’s guide to contemporary Irish language writing”

Tuesday, 2 April 2019 – 2:00pm-3:15pm

Lehman College, CUNY – Music Building, Room 313

Irish as a spoken language has long been in a precarious position – and yet in recent decades over 500 living writers have published novels, plays, poetry collections, children’s books, travel writing and much else. This lecture is an illustrated introduction to some of the best of them and how they take on the challenges of writing for a minority language readership.

Anna Heussaff spent many years working in radio and television in Ireland before she took to creative writing. Her books include crime novels for fluent adult readers of Irish and mystery novels for young teens attuned to both screen games and environmental threats. She lives in Dublin, where she grew up as an Irish speaker.

Alexandra Coller Reading

Alexandra Coller, associate professor of Languages and Literature, will give a special reading from her book, Women, Rhetoric, and Drama in Early Modern Italy.

Sixteenth-century Italy witnessed the rebirth of comedy, tragedy, and tragicomedy in the pastoral mode. In her book, Coller suggests that all three genres were, in fact, remarkably new - if dramatists’ intriguingly sympathetic portrayals of and sustained investment in women as vibrant and dynamic characters of the early modern stage are taken into account.

This study examines the role of rhetoric and gender in early modern Italian drama, in itself and in order to explore its complex interrelationship with the rise of women writers and the role women played in Italian culture and society - while at the same time demonstrating how closely intertwined history, culture, and dramatic writing are.

Reading: Elhum Haghighat

The Middle East and North Africa have recently experienced one of the highest population growth rates in the world, which has profoundly affected the wider region and its institutions. In addition, the recent period of unprecedented political turbulence has further complicated the picture, resulting in uprisings and resistance movements that have coincided with intense shifts in socio-cultural norms, as well as economic and political change.

The complexity of these changes is further explained in the context of demographic transitions [mortality, fertility, migration] that work in concert with development [economic and social modernization] and ultimately, democratization [political modernization]. These three Ds [Demographic, Development, and Democratic transitions] are central to Elhum Haghighat's analysis of the Middle East and North Africa at this crucial time.

Elhum Haghighat is Professor and Chair of Political Science at Lehman College.

Global Warming Demystified

Global Warming Demystified

Do you have questions about the science or reality of global warming?
This presentation by noted educator Jeffrey Bennett should answer them,
while showing that the solutions to this important problem are ones that
people of all political persuasions can agree on. Ideal for college students in all
majors, this talk draws from Dr. Bennett’s book A Global Warming Primer.

Astrophysicist/author Jeffrey Bennett, winner of the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award, has been teaching about global warming for more than 30 years. He is the lead author of college textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, of six critically acclaimed books for the general public,  and of a children’s series selected as the first books to be read aloud from the International Space Station for “Story Time From Space.”

“Dr. Bennett’s careful question-by-question presentation will lead any fair-minded person to see the warming issue more clearly.”  — Hon. George P. Shultz, Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan

The Race Between Education and Catastrophe

In 1920, H.G. Wells wrote: “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” Perhaps no other quote better sums up why teaching is so important, and why so many of us focus our lives on promoting education. In this talk, Dr. Jeff Bennett (CU Boulder) will discuss a few strategies, with examples, that can help us “win” this race by improving our teaching success at almost any level in any field, and especially for the teaching of math and science.

Jeff Bennett (Ph.D., Astrophysics, U. Colorado) has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, and is now a full-time writer/speaker/educator focusing on student and public understanding of math and science. He is the lead author of best-selling college textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics; of six books for children that have all been read by astronauts from the International Space Station; and of critically acclaimed books for the public on topics including science teaching, Einstein’s theory of relativity, and global warming. Dr. Bennett has also served as a Visiting Senior Scientist at NASA Headquarters, where he led efforts to forge stronger links between the research and education communities, he proposed and co-led development of the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and he led creation of the free app “Totality” for solar eclipses. His personal web site is www.JeffreyBennett.com.

Accessibility Advocate Chancey Fleet to Discuss "The Joys and Frictions of Blindness in the Digital Commons"
Chancey Fleet, a Brooklyn-based accessibility advocate, will deliver a talk on  the liberations and complications of using tech while blind. Her talk, titled "De-visualizing Technologies: The Joys and Friction of Blindness in the Digital Commons," is presented by the Lehman College Disability Studies Program.

Friday, May 3, 11 am-12:30 pm
Gillet Hall, Rm. 226

She will explore exciting problems in nonvisual workflows: How do design decisions taken by sighted developers perpetuate the scarcity of tech for tangible transmission of spatial information? What happens in skill- building, self-study and tech education when the general public is unfamiliar with the very existence of the features critical to nonvisual success? When major platforms track accessibility-related interests for the convenience of advertisers, or hide the field for describing social media images behind an opt-in setting, how can we cut through the mystique around accessibility tech to bring these dark patterns into the light?

Fleet coordinates technology education programs at the New York Public Library's Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library. Her current library-based projects include group workshops highlighting mobile technologies for independent living and information literacy; programs introducing youth and adults to non-visual techniques for coding and making with Arduino; and the Dimensions project (a recipient of NYPL’s 2016 Innovation Grant for staff projects), which equips community members with the training and tools they need to create accessible tactile maps, diagrams, graphics and objects. Chancey was recognized as a 2017 Library Journal Mover and Shaker. In her Data & Society fellowship work in 2018-2019, Chancey hopes to deepen public understanding and spark widespread curiosity about how cloud-connected accessibility tools enhance or undermine digital equity, autonomy, security, and privacy.

Rumpelstiltskin '19
The Lehman College Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre, and Dance will present Rumpelstiltskin ’19, a spin on the old Brother’s Grimm classic of an imp-like creature, who has the power to spin straw into gold. In the original story, Rumpelstiltskin plays the part of good and evil—in the beginning he helps a young girl win her freedom from a greedy king, but then later on insists the young girl give up her first-born to repay a debt owed.

This new production will feature original music by Dr. Penny Prince of the Lehman College Music Department, with a script collaboratively written by the cast.

Prince is an award-winning composer whose previous musical productions include Sleeping Beauty, Dither Farm, and When I Get Where I’m Going. In her work, she often takes classic children’s stories and refreshes them with contemporary issues for children and adults.
