“German Nuptial Music in the Seventeenth Century: Sound in the Service of the Social Imaginary”

Janette Tilley, Ph.D.

Associate Professor/ Musicology Chair, Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance

In the century and a half after the Protestant Reformation, German pastors and civic authorities worked to elevate marriage as the ideal state. Among the most popular biblical texts to which they pointed in order to lend scriptural authority to their argument was the Song of Songs. With its ardent and evocative imagery, the Song of Songs was also one of the most popular sources of texts for wedding music. How did early modern wedding music participate in advancing the marriage cause? And how did theological interpretations of the book challenge listeners to hear this libidinous text with ears focused not on the secular, but the eternal?  This study looks at practices and regulations of wedding music in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries to trace important shifts in the Protestant marriage project.
