Join us for the performance of La Casa Rosa by El Centro de Atención a la Familia Migrante Indígena (CAFAMI). CAFAMI performs their plays for a variety of audiences including; rural communities in Mexico, academic institutions and community based organizations in Mexico and the United States. La Casa Rosa is a play in Spanish with English subtitles, showcases the everyday realities confronted by rural indigenous communities in Mexico with a high incidence of U.S.-Mexico migration. The play was written by Daniel Carlton and Soame Citlalime in 2009. The play is based on the real life stories of migrants families of San Francisco Tetlanohcan. Many of the performers that comprise Matlacueyetl participated as performers for the group Soame Citlalime. This tour features new scenes created by Matlacueyetl. The one-hour play weaves together a series of stories to foreground immigration as human rights issue. Themes of the play include the impact of neoliberal reforms on local agrarian economies in Mexico, human rights abuses along the U.S.-Mexico border, and the ever-pressing issue of family disintegration felt by transnational migrant communities today.

Spring Lecture Series: Black Women Healing Trauma in Literature
Professor Sarah Ohmer, assistant professor of Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies and African and African American Studies, will discuss Black women healing trauma in literature as part of the Women's Studies Lecture Series. The representation of trauma and strategies in contemporary literature by Black women across the Americas prompts the questions: Is psychoanalytical theory enough to look at trauma in texts that are post-colonial and Afro-centric in nature? How does one compare experiences of Black women in Cuban, Brazilian, American and French narratives? Voices such as Gloria Anzaldua, Ana Louise Keating, Carol Boyce Davies, Audre Lorde help to orient my decision to blend personal experiences, theory, and literature in my research.

Screening of 'No le Digas a Nadie'
Don’t Tell Anyone (No Le Digas a Nadie) is a film about courage, facing insurmountable obstacles and the determination to fight for justice. In an environment where silence is often seen as necessary for survival, 24 year-old Angy Rivera steps out of the shadows to share her parallel journey of being undocumented and sexually abused, an ordeal all too common in her community. We followAngy’s personal story from poverty in rural Colombia to the front page of The New York Times as she becomes a beacon in a movement for national change. Along her journey Angy inspires her undocumented mother Maria to speak openly about her status as well. Through verite footage and candid interviews, we witness firsthand the all too real consequences faced by over 11 million undocumented people in America today, many of whom have no options for a pathway to citizenship.

Herbert H. Lehman Memorial Lecture with Ban Ki-Moon
Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary-General, will deliver the 47th Annual Herbert H. Lehman Lecture. Ki-moon is the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. His priorities have been to mobilize world leaders around a set of new global challenges, from climate change and economic upheaval to pandemics and increasing pressures involving food, energy and water. He has sought to be a bridge-builder, to give voice to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, and to strengthen the Organization itself.

The Lehman Lecture is a tradition at Lehman College – an opportunity for the community to honor the legacy of Herbert H. Lehman, former New York Governor, Senator, and statesman. He was widely admired as a dedicated public servant and passionate advocate for the poor and downtrodden, seeking to expand the rights and opportunities for all Americans, regardless of gender, race, or creed.

Previous speakers have included George McGovern, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., Albert Gore Sr., Geraldine Ferraro, George Mitchell, Jill Abramson, and many more. The 2013 Lehman Lecture was delivered by Arthur Levine, president of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship and former president of Columbia University Teachers College.

Arts & Humanities “Works in Progress” Spring 2016
Professor Marcello Di Bello, Αssistant Professor, Department of Philosophy. "Is a High Probability of Guilt Enough to Convict?" In criminal trials, the guilt of the defendant must be established beyond a reasonable doubt, and whenever this requirement is not met the defendant must be acquitted. What does this requirement amount to? In the last forty years, as a result of the law and economics movement, legal scholars have proposed a probability-based interpretation. According to this interpretation, if the defendant’s probability of guilt reaches a sufficiently high value, say 99 percent, that should be enough to meet the burden of proof in criminal cases. I argue against this interpretation. I do so by considering three goals that are paramount to criminal trials. The first is that we want to protect defendants from wrongful convictions. The second is that we want to make sure that as many factually guilty defendants as possible are convicted and as many factually innocent defendants as possible are acquitted. The third is that we want to have proportionally fewer wrongful convictions than wrongful acquittals since we typically consider the conviction of an innocent defendant a greater harm than the acquittal of a guilty defendant. I argue that the probability-based interpretation does not adequately promote any of these three goals. Insofar as we care about them, we should look for an alternative theory of the burden of proof in criminal cases. I shall sketch what an alternative theory should look like.

The Sensuality Party
The New Group presents THE SENSUALITY PARTY, a new play by Justin Kuritzkes and directed by Danya Taymor.  Brought to life in common rooms and student unions at college campuses across all five boroughs of New York City, Justin Kuritzkes’ new play THE SENSUALITY PARTY depicts six college students – three women and three men – who reflect on an afternoon of group sex they shared during their first semester, and how what began as a rather casual experiment went suddenly and horribly wrong. As they internalize and even fetishize this event, they battle their own disaffection and disconnection from the wider world. Kuritzkes offers an incisive look at his own post-9/11 generation’s consciousness. Visit thenewgroup.org for tickets and full performance calendar.
