The Women's Studies Program Second Spring Lecture Series Presentation
The Women's Studies Program Second Spring Lecture Series presents "Somos Guerreras: Queer Feminisms in Latin American Hip Hop" by Melissa Castillo Planas, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of English.

According to Guatemalan MC Rebeca Lane, "Feminism for me and for us and many women in Latin America it's not about a book, it's not about theory, it's not about academics.  It's about how you feel and how you want to live your life without machismo."  For Rebeca Lane, that life is one that identifies as a lesbian, a feminist, and a "trans-anarchist rapper."  As a hip-hop artist that means addressing what she sees as targeted attacks on vulnerable populations in Latin American" women, indigenous and queer.  Through a message that is infused with feminism, social justice, as well as national, international and personal histories Lane fights for greater visibility for queer women in hip hop through her collective Somos Guerreras, a tour, documentary project and workshops to facilitate further female networks among a new and younger generation of women.  This paper will trace the emergence of queer hip hop feminisms throughout Latin America.  Doubly marginalized both by cultures and music genre that celebrate heteronormativity, machismo and overtly sexualized female representations.

She was a leader in the Obama Administration as United States Assistant Attorney General and head of the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs.  She led the Department of Justice’s work to address the issue of community trust in the justice system through a variety of programs including the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice, a partnership with John Jay College and other academic institutions across the country designed to address lack of trust in the criminal justice system.  She also focused on juvenile justice issues, bail reform and re-entry for individuals leaving prison, and in her distinguished career at Alston & Bird LLP, she was the first African- American woman elected as chair of the management committee at any major national firm.

This event has been cancelled.

This book explores
the cultural and creative lives of the largely young undocumented Mexican population in New York City since September 11, 2001.

Inspired by a dialogue between the landmark works of Paul Gilroy and Gloria Anzaldúa, it develops a new analytic framework - the Atlantic Borderlands - which bridges Mexican diasporic experiences in New York City and the black diaspora:  not as a comparison, but in recognition that colonialism, interracial, and interethnic contact through trade, migration, and slavery are connected via capitalist economies and technological developments.

Melissa Castillo Planas is Assistant Professor in Lehman College’s English Department.

Reading with Timothy Alborn: All that Glittered: Britain's Most Precious Metal from Adam Smith to the Gold Rush

Beginning with Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, which validated Britain's position as an economic powerhouse, and running through the mid-19th century gold rushes in California and Australia, Alborn draws on contemporary descriptions of gold’s value to highlight its role in financial, political, and cultural realms.

All That Glittered tells the story of gold as both a marker of value and a valuable commodity - while providing a new window into Britain's ascendance after the 1750s.

Timothy Alborn is Professor in Lehman College’s History Department and at CUNY Graduate Center.  He is author of Conceiving Companies: Joint-Stock Politics in Victorian England and Regulated Lives: Life Insurance and British Society, 1800-1914.
