Lecture: Women in Computer Science: Navigating the Masculinist World of Artificial Intelligence
Sonia Rai, Technology Coordinator for the School of Arts & Humanities, will bring a talk about "Women in Computer Science: Navigating the Masculinist World of Artificial Intelligence." Artificial Intelligence (AI) involves teaching computers about our world through massive sets of data, but who is doing the teaching? Women represent a mere one quarter of computer professionals. Yet IT jobs are predicted to increase 22 percent through 2020. Artificial or Augmented Intelligence is forecast to be the catalyst that transforms our world dramatically as the industrial revolution. Our lecture seeks to define AI and identify the prominent contemporary women in the AI field. Our goal is to provide a conduit for raising awareness regarding the gender imbalance and encourage more women to enroll in Computer Science classes at Lehman College and beyond.

The Educational Summit is a full-day conference sponsored annually by “CUNitY,” an alliance formed by the Black Male Initiative programs at Lehman College, Hostos Community College, and Bronx Community College. The conference, while open to all, focuses on educational and social issues related to the retention of Black and Latino male college students. Participants hear a panel discussion and then meet in workshops led by CUNY faculty and staff on topics derived from the panel discussion. The keynote speaker of the educational summit is Mr. Felipe Luciano. A news reporter and anchor, poet, writer, activist, and lecturer. Felipe Luciano is one of the most dynamic Latino public figures in the United States of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His eloquence, vision, and passion for issues of social justice are extraordinary and reflect the courage of a generation that chose to organize, teach and struggle against the powerful institutions of discrimination. This two-time Emmy recipient and former WNBC-TV New York news anchor, defied adversity early in life. Luciano was born in New York City and raised in East Harlem and Brooklyn. With the support of the college readiness program, SEEK, he enrolled in the City University of New York Queens College campus, where he immediately became involved in the student activism of the 1960s.

Women's History Month Talk with Prof. Brittany O'Neal on Material Liberation
In honor of Women's History Month, Professor Brittany O'Neal, Adjunct Assistant Professor from the Department of Africana Studies, will give a talk, entitled "I am Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: Critical Thought in the Interest of Material Equality." This presentation will engage a scholarly discussion about the strategies used to construct and execute a political movement focused on material liberation. The philosophies of Angela Davis and Fannie Lou Hamer will act as an anchor; their political platforms play a pivotal role towards garnering voices for all dehumanized people. The talk will examine the process of women's role in identity formation and resistance toward the super-exploitation of Black working-class women in the United States. It will disclose the necessary projection of unifying the working class through a democratic process of self-determination as a means for political, economic and social liberation.

Disability studies scholars regard disability, not as a mere physical difference, but as an identity grounded within an individual’s situation/point of view and best understood within the context of multiple identity markers (race, class, gender, and sexual orientation). Drawing upon stories told by persons with disabilities and their families, Professor Valle will examine the relationship between disability and intersectional identities as well as “ways of knowing” that emerge from telling stories. Her recent work staging disability stories as a means to raise public awareness about the diverse perspectives and experiences of people with disabilities and their families will be shared.

World famous for traditional flamenco, Cigala is now distinguished for his imagination and courage in exploring other musical traditions, such as salsa. “A musical game-changer, the rare musician who single-handedly alters the direction of a genre” NPR “Indestructible,” is his new CD, recorded in Puerto Rico, Colombia, Spain, and the U.S., the singer revisits the classic sound of 70s salsa, reinventing some of his hits with his soulful, inimitable flamenco touch. He will be joined by incredible musicians and voices of the salsa tradition. In fact, Tito Allen, Johnny Rodriguez, Jorge Reinaldo, Jimmy Bosch and Ricky Gonzalez have confirmed their participation. Others are expected to confirm in the coming days. Don’t miss this historic concert in which Cigala pays tribute to his tropical style, and introduces his new salsa talents. In addition to featured Puerto Rican musicians there are songs by Puerto Rican composer Tite Curet Alonso. For more information about Diego El Cigala www.elcigala.com.

Lehman and Royal Irish Academy Percussion Ensembles

Lehman College’s Percussion Ensemble and the Royal Irish Academy of Music will present a joint performance of works by Steve Reich, Tan Dun, Cal Tjader, and others, as well as demonstrations of various Afro-Cuban folk rhythms on Thursday, April 20.  The performance, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. in Room 330 of the Music Building.

All Day
Denim Day
Wear jeans with a purpose, support survivors, and educate yourself and others about sexual assault. For the past 18 years, Peace Over Violence has run its Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. In this rape prevention education campaign we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault. This year’s Denim Day is April 26, 2017.

Lecture: Unrewarded Care: Misandria and the Neglect of Women in the Poetry of Margarita Hickey
Dr. Juan Jesus Payan, assistant professor in the Department of Languages and Literature, will speak on "Unrewarded Care: Misandria and the Neglect of Women in the Poetry of Margarita Hickey (1789)" as part of the Women's Lecture Series. The Spanish Enlightenment signified the birth of a new sensibility in gender politics that allowed the foundation of modern feminism. Poetry was a genre relegated to a second-rate status, mostly devoted to didactic morals and constricted by the Neo-Classical style in vogue. Margarita Hickey, one of the dazzling poets of the period, denounces the depravity of men and the neglect with which female care is rewarded under patriarchy. She aims at establishing an unprecedented territory for homosocial solidarity and support among women in Peninsular literature. Her contributions will be contextualized within her biography and ideas through two of her most famous poems.

Orquesta Aragon and Orquesta Broadway
The importance of Orquesta Aragón to Cuban music is similar to that of the Duke Ellington Orchestra or the Count Basie Orchestra to American jazz. In the 1950s, Orquesta Aragón was signed to the American label RCA Victor, and found great success internationally spearheading the first wave of Cuban cha-cha-cha and mambo mania that captivated American audiences. Then led by legendary violinist Rafael Lay, many historians cite this period as Orquesta Aragón’s apex. Tours of the U.S., Europe, and Latin America would ensue only to be interrupted by the politics and the Cuban blockade in the 1960s.

Following renewed interest in Cuban Music in the 1990s, Orquesta Aragón would return to the United States for three successful tours beginning in 1999 including concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, and Zellerbach Theatre in Berkeley. Their 1999 CD, La Charanga Eterna, marked the sixtieth anniversary of the band’s founding. Orquesta Broadway is a Cuban charanga style band that was founded in New York City in 1962 by flautist Eddy Zervigón and his brothers Rudy (violin) and Kelvin (piano) along with their neighbor Roberto Torres as their vocalist. Orquesta Broadway debuted in October 1963 at NYC’s Palladium concert hall. Now, more than fifty years after its foundation and despite changing music styles, the always-in-demand Orquesta Broadway continues to enjoy an enviable position at the forefront of Afro-Cuban and Latin music in the country.
