12:30 PM - 2:00 PM | The Women's Studies Program First Spring Lecture Series Presentation The Women's Studies Program presents the First Spring Lecture Series entitled "The Michael Field Diary Project: Archival Transcription in the Classroom" by Olivia Loksing Moy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, English Director, English Honors Program on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm in Carman Hall, Room 221.
This lecture presents the joint faculty-student research between Professor Olivia Loksing Moy (English Department) and The CUNY Rare Book Scholars, a group of Lehman College undergraduates who transcribed over five hundred pages of the journals of the nineteenth-century writers Michael Field.
Surprising to many, Michael Field was not a male author from the Victorian period, but rather the joint pseudonym for the aunt and niece couple, Katharine Harris Bradley (1846 - 1914) and Edith Emma Cooper (1862 - 1913). Bradley and Cooper were romantic partners, housemates, and co-authors who produced over forty collections of poems and verse plays at the height of British Aestheticism. Recounting their interactions with notable artists of the period, including Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Charles Ricketts, and Walter Pater.

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM | The Women's Studies Program Second Spring Lecture Series Presentation The Women's Studies Program Second Spring Lecture Series presents "Somos Guerreras: Queer Feminisms in Latin American Hip Hop" by Melissa Castillo Planas, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of English.
According to Guatemalan MC Rebeca Lane, "Feminism for me and for us and many women in Latin America it's not about a book, it's not about theory, it's not about academics. It's about how you feel and how you want to live your life without machismo." For Rebeca Lane, that life is one that identifies as a lesbian, a feminist, and a "trans-anarchist rapper." As a hip-hop artist that means addressing what she sees as targeted attacks on vulnerable populations in Latin American" women, indigenous and queer. Through a message that is infused with feminism, social justice, as well as national, international and personal histories Lane fights for greater visibility for queer women in hip hop through her collective Somos Guerreras, a tour, documentary project and workshops to facilitate further female networks among a new and younger generation of women. This paper will trace the emergence of queer hip hop feminisms throughout Latin America. Doubly marginalized both by cultures and music genre that celebrate heteronormativity, machismo and overtly sexualized female representations.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM | (cancelled) Reading with Melissa Castillo Planas: A Mexican State of Mind: New York City and the New Borderlands of Culture
This event has been cancelled.
This book explores the cultural and creative lives of the largely young undocumented Mexican population in New York City since September 11, 2001.
Inspired by a dialogue between the landmark works of Paul Gilroy and Gloria Anzaldúa, it develops a new analytic framework - the Atlantic Borderlands - which bridges Mexican diasporic experiences in New York City and the black diaspora: not as a comparison, but in recognition that colonialism, interracial, and interethnic contact through trade, migration, and slavery are connected via capitalist economies and technological developments.
Melissa Castillo Planas is Assistant Professor in Lehman College’s English Department. | Leonard Lief Library - (Treehouse Conference Room 317) |
