Event Description:

Red Grooms, Artist
Public Talk
Wednesday, March 13 at 5 p.m.
Lehman Art Gallery, Fine Arts Gallery

Grooms was born in Nashville in 1937 and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the New School, New York. Grooms played a crucial role in late 1950s downtown Manhattan, developing what became known as "Happenings" and co-founding two loft galleries, where he exhibited friends and peers. Though best known for his immersive installations, Grooms has also created a more intimate, though equally wide-ranging body of work in drawing, painting, and sculpture that reveals him to be a one-man movement whose vision of art and culture is broad, democratic, and joyous. Grooms' work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Carnegie Museum of Art. In 2018, Dan Nadel curated a solo exhibition titled "Red Grooms: Handiwork, 1955-2018" at Marlborough Contemporary.
