Lehman College Presents Passing Strange: The Musical on December 6-9
Lehman College’s Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre and Dance presents the third production of its 2017/18 season, Passing Strange: The Musical by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, on Wednesday, December 6 at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday, December 7-9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre on campus. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 with a CUNY ID and FREE for Lehman students with a valid ID. Tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com.

Passing Strange: The Musical, a dynamic coming-of-age story about a young African-American musical artist, was nominated for seven Tony Awards (and won one for best book) during its initial 2008 Broadway run. The Lehman College production is being directed by Andrea Rosalinda Stover and choreographed by Nicholas Leichter. The music director is Christian Gibbs, who performed in the band of the original production. And for the first time ever in a Lehman musical, all of the actors and musicians will be Lehman students.

Dr. Rick DesRochers, Director of Theatre and Multimedia Performing Arts at Lehman College, said: “Passing Strange is not your typical musical, as it is more of a rock concert featuring an all-Lehman student band, singers, dancers, and actors from the newly merged Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance Department. This show is important for us to produce because it reflects the struggles, sacrifices, and joys of artists of color in our current times, something our students can certainly relate to and which they experience first-hand every day.”

The Lehman College Theatre and Dance programs, having grown from a handful of majors to over 100 in the past two years, offer multidisciplinary BFA programs designed to challenge students to develop the knowledge and skills, as well as the conceptual, critical, and creative perspectives necessary for a professional life in the performing arts.

“The voices of our student population, with the majority being students of color and many being recent immigrants, are under-represented in the culture at large,” Dr. DesRochers said. “So, highlighting these voices is one way to contribute to Lehman's mission of embracing diversity. Our productions focus on devised theatre and dance that teach students how to develop as artists, but they also emphasize social justice and creating opportunities to explore important ideas.”

Open Auditions for Spring Collaborative Musical
Open auditions have been announced for the upcoming spring production When I Get to Where I’m Going ’18 planned by the Collaborative Musical Theatre Project at Lehman College, The City University of New York.

The When I Get to Where I’m Going ’18 auditions for singers, actors, dancers and stage crew will take place by appointment on Wednesday, December 13 and Thursday, December, 14, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Room 306 of the Music Building of the Lehman College campus,

To make an appointment for an audition, please contact Dr. Penny Prince, assistant professor of music at Lehman College; her phone is (718) 9607796 and email is penny.price@lehman.cuny.edu.

Remarked Dr. Prince, who wrote both the original and updated scores of When I Get to Where I’m Going ’18: “In the 1950's, America finally began to confront the evils of segregation and inequality. The bus boycott movement and the struggle to integrate schools were pivotal events in our history. Now, in a new century, we still grapple with injustice and racism. ‘When will we learn?’ is one of the themes of our spring original musical, When I Get To Where I'm Going ‘18, which will spotlight the 1950’s juxtaposed with 2018. I've composed a score of more than nine songs, and the cast will collaborate on the script for this exciting new production. We seek singing actors, dancers, and crew who can commit to weekly rehearsals.”

A production of When I Get to Where I’m Going was staged by the Collaborative Musical Theatre Project several years ago, but with social justice issues more pressing than ever in the past year. Dr. Prince said she began receiving requests to mount a new production of the musical. To do so, she has added some new plot lines and additional songs reflecting today’s issues.

Lehman College and Community Chamber Orchestra: Changing Times Concert

The Lehman College and Community Chamber Orchestra will give its winter performance entitled Changing Times on Wednesday, December 13, at 7:00 pm in the Hearth Room, on the 3rd floor of the Music Building. The public is invited; admission is free, but all donations are gratefully accepted.

Directed by Professor Kyunghun Kim, the performance will feature Beethoven’s, Symphony No.1, an early work of his but highly regarded as very characteristic of his style. Renowned pianist and Lehman faculty member Molly Morkosky will play the lyrical 2nd movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.20 accompanied by the orchestra, and rounding out the program will be the Prelude to Verdi’s opera “La Traviata” in which the composer’s melodic charm and beauty shine.

Activism in Academia II
Activism in Academia is an interdisciplinary, one-day symposium organized to initiate a larger conversation between CUNY and non-CUNY faculty and students about the value of apolitical and political work in the university as it relates to activism within underrepresented communities. How do we incorporate activism in our classrooms, on our campuses, and in our scholarship? Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates will engage in discussion and debate through various panels. We will especially focus on DACA & immigration reform, the taking down of confederate statues on campuses, and LGBTQ activist archives.

Artist as Witness: Cultural Production, Conflict, and Human Rights in Syria
Through seven years of war, Syrian artists have played a crucial role as witnesses to the devastation of their country, and to the suffering and fortitude of its people. This one-day conference explores Syrian cultural producers’ varied responses to the ongoing conflict. Visual artists, playwrights, musicians, and filmmakers invoke, critique, and give voice to experiences of oppression, trauma, exile, and loss. Wartime works reflect an intensification of the outrage, longing, ambivalence, irony, and contradiction that have long imbued Syrian expressive culture. This conference showcases rarely seen works by Syrian artists, and places their creators in dialogue with a young generation of Syrian academics and activists.

This is a Lehman Center for Human Rights and Peace Studies Eighth Annual Conference. It is co-sponsored by the Leonard Lief Library and the Department of Anthropology.
