The work on view represents the artistic transition seen against a landscape of societal progress. The project highlights cultural exchange and, at its core, examines the implications of transition on an evolving Latin American culture.

Reading: Puerto Rico Before and After the Storm by Rima Brusi

The concept of aftershocks is used in the context of earthquakes to describe the jolts felt after the initial quake - but no disaster is a singular event.

Aftershocks of Disaster examines the lasting effects of Hurricane Maria - not just the effects of the wind or the rain - but delving into what followed:  state failure, social abandonment, capitalization on human misery, and the collective trauma produced by the botched response.

Rima Brusi is Distinguished Lecturer in the Anthropology Department Lehman College.

The artists’ need to “feel part of something” that can likewise be recognized and defined by others will be explored within the exhibition. The work on view represents the artistic transition seen against a landscape of societal progress. The project highlights cultural exchange and, at its core, examines the implications of transition on an evolving Latin American culture.
