Veteran's Day
Event Image The Dominican Racial Imaginary
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

The Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies will host a special presentation and discussion of "The Dominican Racial Imaginary" with Professor Milagros Ricourt. In "The Dominican Racial Imaginary," Dr. Ricourt asks: Why do so many Dominicans deny the African components of their DNA, culture, and history?

Ricourt uncovers a complex and often contradictory Dominican racial imaginary. Through fieldwork at the Dominican-Haitian border, she provides a firsthand narrative of how Dominicans are resisting the official account of their national identity, and instead embracing the African influence that has always been part of their cultural heritage. This book expands our understanding of how national and racial imaginaries develop, why they persist, and how they might be subverted.

Jeannette Graulau Reading: The Underground Wealth of Nations
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Capitalist mining corporations - the earliest capitalist industries of feudal Europe - appeared in the Alps, Carpathians, Tuscany, Sardinia, and the Balkans from the 12th century onward. These private shareholding societies employed notaries, accountants, chief engineers, mine geometry specialists, cashiers, and ore carriers. Investors were the CEOs of mining corporations and Europe’s earliest capitalists. They paid the costs of continuous operation, and enjoyed the economic gains of mining - at the expense of poor free miners, serfs, women, and idle feudal lords. The Underground Wealth of Nations: On the Capitalist Origins of Silver Mining, A.D. 1150-1450 by Jeannette Graulau, Professor of Political Science at Lehman College, will be published soon by Yale University Press.
