Subverting Genre - NYCWP Writer's Residency

Subverting Genre

It is often the writer who dwells on the future that shows us the darkness of our own age. In this seminar we will be surveying multiple facets of genre fiction to discover what is possible outside the confines of “traditional” literature. Our goal will be to observe both the strengths and the weaknesses of each novel we explore to better understand what can be learned, borrowed, or adapted to our own work. Special care will be given to the prejudices or problematic aspects that may or may not exist within each novel with an aim of learning to subvert such tropes. While it is beyond the bounds of this course to be all-encompassing, the booklist has been designed to give solid introductions to Afro-futurism, historical speculative fiction, Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and 1960’s American science fiction.

Participants must access their own copies of the following texts:

October 9: Clay’s Ark, Octavia Butler
November 6: Ledfeather, Stephen Graham Jones
December 4: The Ballad of Black Tom, Victor LaValle
January 8: VALIS, Philip K. Dick

When: On Zoom, Saturdays, 10a-12p 10/9, 11/6, 12/4, 1/8

Start Day
Register for Spring 2022 Semester (Multi-Day Event)

Registration in CUNYfirst

Students may search and register for their courses online via CUNYfirst. Registration may be completed anywhere with reliable internet access and students may register on/after their assigned enrollment appointment. NOTE: Enrollment Appointments cannot be changed. You must wait until your assigned Date/Time.

Search/Enrolling for Courses:

To search for courses currently being offered, you may use the Search for Classes button, located on the top right hand side of your Student Center. For step-by-step instructions on how to search for courses and place them in your shopping cart, click here. NOTE: Adding a class to your shopping cart does not hold a seat for you and is not enrolling in a class.

Once courses have been placed in your shopping cart/planner, you may proceed with enrolling for the desired courses. For step-by-step instructions on how to enroll for your courses, click here.

Dropping/Swapping Courses

After courses have been added to a student’s schedule, they may be dropped or swapped for a different course within a term. Prior to dropping or swapping a course, all students should consult the Academic Calendar to view drop, refund, and withdrawal period deadlines.

To view step-by-step instructions on how to drop courses, click here.

To view step-by-step instructions on how to swap courses, click here.

Wait Listed Courses

Students may use the Wait List feature when a course is currently closed. However, not all courses offer a Wait List Option. Students placed on the Wait List will be assigned a position number and will be auto-enrolled based on their assigned number when a seat becomes available. Once a student is auto-enrolled, they will receive an email communication via their Lehman email account. To view step-by-step instructions on how to place yourself on the wait list for a course, click here.

Important: Once you have registered and paid for any semester or session, you are responsible for any fees and academic penalties incurred from registration changes you make. This includes the addition of Session II courses (for summer) and winter courses. You must drop unwanted courses before the first day of classes or you will be liable for the unvalidated/unpaid courses.

All registered students MUST complete the registration process with the Bursar. Visit the Bursar’s Office site for Tuition Payment Options information.

Redefining Memory - NYCWP Writers Residency

Redefining Memory

Writers are often told, “write what you know,” but that doesn’t mean memoir is not a deeply imaginative process. In this reading and discussion group, we will examine one text per month and discuss the ways in which experimental writers are bending the boundaries of memory and redefining what “autobiography” constitutes. We will experiment with different forms, modalities and narrative structures as participants repackage their own experiences into unique ways of telling their story. A second semester of this workshop will be offered in the spring with a different book list.

Participants must access their own copies of the following texts:

October 16: In the Dream House, Carmen Maria Machado
November 13: Dictee, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha
December 11: Jane: A Murder, Maggie Nelson
January 15: The Yellow House, Sarah M. Broom

When: On Zoom, Saturdays, 10am-12pm 10/16, 11/13, 12/11, 1/15

Cost: $125

Cost: $125

RADICAL CARE: LEADING FOR JUSTICE IN URBAN SCHOOLS

Women’s & Gender Studies / Lehman College-CUNY

Spring Lecture Series

Radical Care: Leading for Justice in Urban Schools

Rosa L. Rivera-McCutchen, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Leadership Studies Coordinator, School & District Leadership Programs

In her new book Radical Care: Leading for Justice in Urban Schools, Dr. Rosa L. Rivera- McCutchen argues that care, as typically described and enacted, is not sufficient for leading schools, particularly those serving Black and Latinx children. Instead, school leaders need to embrace radical care. Dr. Rivera-McCutchen will outline the five components of radical care— adopting an antiracist stance, cultivating authentic relationships, believing in students’ and teachers’ capacity for excellence, leveraging power strategically, and embracing a spirit of radical hope—while sharing vignettes from her personal experiences and research that exemplify each of the components. Calling for educators to thoughtfully challenge existing structures that reproduce inequality, Radical Care offers a much-needed framework that will guide practice with a sense of urgency and a spirit of hope.

The W.H.O.L.E. Experience - CUNY Institute for Health Equity and HS2N

The CUNY Institute for Health Equity and Dean Elgloria Harrison invite you to a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workshop:

The W.H.O.L.E. Experience is a professional development that explores Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) through an iterative and intentional instructional design and delivery conceptual framework. W.H.O.L.E. is an acronym that represents, Welcoming, Holistic, Open, Liberating, and Empowering. Despite broadly understanding DEI, it is often difficult for faculty and instructors to apply or articulate if they are applying this important work within their courses. This experience is designed to make DEI in instructional design and delivery more accessible and applicable. This professional development opportunity has an iterative structure to support continuous improvement. This framework allows for groups and individuals to assess their instructional strategies. There are also possibilities to leverage this framework for instructional observation and syllabi review purposes. Moreover, instructors will be able to assess their current course components with the W.H.O.L.E. conceptual framework to determine to what extent their courses address DEI, while also expanding their design and delivery of their courses to enhance the learning environment and experience. This experience will draw from the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Significant Learning, Sense of Belonging, Andragogy, and the ENHANCE Learning Model theories and research.
