Adam Clayton Powell, IV was born and raised in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He comes from a long legacy of public service and civil rights. His mother, Yvette Diago, is the granddaughter of Gonzalo Diago who was Mayor of San Juan in the 1940s. Adam’s father, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., was the legendary Congressman who represented Harlem from 1944 thru 1970. After graduating high school from Academia Sagrado Corazón in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Adam moved to the mainland and graduated from Howard University in 1984 and Fordham Law School in 1988. In 2000, Adam was elected to the NY State Assembly to represent East Harlem and other parts of the Harlem area. For 10 years he brought to the Assembly a progressive voice that would not compromise his beliefs on behalf of the people of this State. During his tenure in the Assembly, he also served as the Chairman of the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute which brings over 150 high school students from across the State for a three-day conference which ends with a mock session in the Assembly chamber and a scholarship dinner.

In the afternoon, we will host a Panel Discussion focusing on helping students modify stories  for various environments. We would like to invite you to be a  panelist  and address the importance of students telling their story  effectively using  social media.  For example, what they should post on FB, Linked In, Instagram etc . The panel discussion will be 2:00pm-3:00pm

Thinking through Quality Questioning workshop

This fall, the Teaching & Learning Commons offers a workshop series based on Thinking through Quality Questioning: Deepening Student Engagement (Walsh, Sattes, 2011).  Quality questioning engages students and teachers in two areas: asking instructors to re-examine their communication styles and asking teachers and students to design questions that support deep learning and thinking.

These hands-on workshops will include

  • small and large group discussions,
  • design and modeling of quality questions,
  • opportunities to share teaching challenges and successes, and
  • a variety of strategies and resources for classroom and online instructional use
The workshops are offered in Carman B81, in the Multimedia Center.

The seventh annual three-day Johnny Pacheco Latin Music and Jazz Festival will run Wednesday, November 18-20, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre, with evening performances on the 19th and 20th at 7:30p.m. The festival brings together young aspiring musicians with seasoned professionals for an extended jam session. Admission is free and the public is welcome. 

The annual festival provides performance and learning opportunities for talented musicians who are studying music in New York City schools. More than 250 students perform at this festival each year, which is broadcast live on Bronxnet TV and online at lehman.edu/jazzfeststream. 

Renowned saxophonist Lou Marini and pianist Larry Willis will give special performances on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m.  Marini is best known for his work with The Blues Brothers; Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and Saturday Night Live. Willis has performed with the South African trumpeter and composer Hugh Masekela; The Fort Apache Band; and Blood, Sweat, and Tears, as well.

The seventh annual three-day Johnny Pacheco Latin Music and Jazz Festival at Lehman College will run Nov. 18-20, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre. The festival brings together young aspiring musicians with seasoned professionals for an extended jam session. Admission is free and the public is welcome. 

The annual festival provides performance and learning opportunities for talented musicians who are studying music in New York City schools. More than 250 students perform at this festival each year, which is broadcast live on Bronxnet TV and online at lehman.edu/jazzfeststream. 

Renowned saxophonist Lou Marini and pianist Larry Willis will give special performances on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m.  Marini is best known for his work with The Blues Brothers; Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and Saturday Night Live. Willis has performed with the South African trumpeter and composer Hugh Masekela; The Fort Apache Band; and Blood, Sweat, and Tears, as well.

"Gender Violence, Sexual Torture and Political Imprisonment in post-war Greece" Dr. Katerina Stefatos from the Department of Anthropology will briing a presentation as part of the Women's Studies Fall Lecture series. She will attempt to draw an analogy between envisioned correctional strategies of the Greek state during the Greek Civil War (1946-1949) and the military dictatorship (1967-1974) in order to trace a continuum of gender-specific bio-political mechanisms of power and control. The Lehman College and Community Latin Jazz Ensemble kicks off the holiday season with a free concert entitled Ya Viene la Navidad "The Holidays are coming" on Tuesday, December 8, at 4:30 pm in the Hearth Room (3rd floor, Music Building).

This exciting program will include the music of Tito Puente, Carlos Santana, Cortijo, Armando Manzanero, and Vince Guaraldi, as well as a few surprises. Featured will be vocalists Felix Otero, Cindy Matamoros, and dena Robins. Co-directed by Victor Rendon and Armando Rodriguez, the Lehman College and Community Latin Jazz Ensemble includes students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members.

Refreshments will be available, supporting Lehman L.I.F.E., and the dance floor will be open. Come join the holiday celebration!

Lehman College & Community Band: Troika! "A Musical Sleigh Ride"

The Lehman College Community Band will celebrate the holiday season with “Troika! A Musical Sleigh Ride,” a free concert featuring a mix of holiday music and classics for wind band. This event, which is open to the public, will take place on Sunday, December 20, at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre.

Led by Professor Alan Hollander, the ensemble will perform a wide range of works, including the classic Overture and Caccia by Carlo Menotti, and Rick Kirby’s arrangement of the timeless American folk song He’s Gone Away.

Also featured will be the exciting “Finale” from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Robert W. Smith’s arrangement of the ever-popular folk melody Greensleeves. Rounding out the program will be perennial holiday favorites Christmas Festival, Chanukah Festival Overture, and not one but two sleigh rides of the season: the eponymous work by Leroy Anderson, and the concert-title piece, Serge Prokofieff’s joyful “Troika” from the Lieutenant Kije Suite.

The Band of the Royal Marines and the Pipes, Drums, and Highland Dancers of the Scots Guards

Presence, honor, pride, tradition and precision will be the order of the day with the beat of the drums keeping time to the visual spectacle of the Royal Marines and the Scots Guards. 

 The Royal Marines’ musicians are regarded as one of the most versatile in the military musical world. Except for soloists, the musicians are required to attain an acceptable standard on both string and a wind instrument. The band provide different musical ensembles from orchestras to dance bands. 

The Band of the Scots Guards origins go back to 1716 with their primary role to provide music for ceremonial occasions such as the changing of the Queen’s Guard at Buckingham Palace and to bring music to the masses, much as it remains today. The band currently consists of 43 musicians.

Lehman College Choruses Accepting New Members

Two Lehman College choruses are accepting new members for the Spring Semester. 

The first rehearsal for the Lehman College Chorus, which meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m., will be held on Monday, February 1. The Lehman College Community Chorus, which meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30 p.m., will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, February 2. 

Community members may join either chorus. There is no course fee required to participate unless college credit is desired. Previous choral experience and note reading ability are recommended. 

Each chorus will prepare Dvorak- Mass in D Major, and shorter works by Whitacre, Copland, Gershwin, Ellington, Kern and others for a joint concert with the Lehman College Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, May 1, at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts.

Both choruses rehearse in Room 330 of the Music Building on the Lehman Campus. Located at Bedford Park Boulevard West and Goulden Avenue in the northwest Bronx. The campus is accessible by either subway or bus.
