End Date: 11/30/2016End Time: 2:00 PM
Event Description:
Professor Krystle Farman of the Department of History will bring a talk on "Hija de Confesion": Black Female Religiosity in Baroque New Spain, as part of our lecture series. Her presentation will examine the position of women of African descent in religious communities in 17th and 18th century New Spain.Engaged with Christian practices and rituals as a manifestation of their own conceptions of the Catholic faith women played a central role in the formation of religious communities. Their participation in religious processions and mystical experiences provided them with a spiritual authority often denied to women and people of non-Spanish descent. This presentation will encourage scholars to delve more deeply into the position of female religiosity and community formation in the black societies of the New World.
