2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Before Freedom Summer: A Talk with Christopher Bonastia
Prince Edward County closed its schools for five years (1959-1964) rather than obey a desegregation order from the Federal court. In the summer of 1963, students from Queens College and New York City teachers traveled to Virginia to run a "Freedom School" for black Prince Edward students. This lecture explores the creation of these Freedom Schools in Virginia and their links to Freedom Summer in Mississippi.

Christopher Bonastia, professor of sociology, is the author of Southern Stalemate: Five Years Without Public Education in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
