11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Reading with Timothy Alborn: All That Glittered Britain's Most Precious Metal from Adam Smith to the Gold Rush
From the early eighteenth century into the 1830s, Great Britain was the only major country in the world to adopt gold as the sole basis of its currency, in the process absorbing much of the world’s supply of that metal into its pockets, cupboards, and coffers. During the same period, Britons forged a nation by distilling a heady brew of Protestantism, commerce, and military might, while preserving important features of its older social hierarchy. All That Glittered argues for a close connection between these occurrences, by linking justifications for gold’s role in British society—starting in the 1750s and running through the mid-nineteenth century gold rushes in California and Australia—to contemporary descriptions of that metal’s varied values at home and abroad. Most of these accounts attributed British commercial and military success to a credit economy pinned on gold, stigmatized southern European and subaltern peoples for their nonmonetary uses of gold, or tried to marginalize people at home for similar forms of alleged misconduct. This book tells a primarily cultural origin story about the gold standard’s emergence after 1850 as an international monetary system, while providing a new window on British exceptionalism during the previous century.

12:30 AM - 1:30 PM It Just Feels Right: How to Feel Ready to Give Your Best Performance: A (Virtual) Master Class with Toyin Spellman-Díaz

Oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz grew up surrounded by her parents’ enormous record collection in Washington, DC. It was there she absorbed the many layers of classical music’s beauty and the inspiring and uniting potential of the world’s diverse cultural landscape. Ms. Spellman-Diaz earned her Bachelors of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and her Masters and Professional Studies degrees at the Manhattan School of Music. Her orchestral career includes performances with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

Hailed by the Washington Post for her “smooth, controlled tone and excellent technique,” Toyin has performed concertos with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Manhattan Virtuosi, and with the Kennedy Center Youth Orchestra. An original member of Imani Winds, Ms. Spellman-Diaz has built her career as a champion of contemporary chamber music. Along with her Imani Winds colleagues, she is devoted to discovering new and diverse musical voices and cultures to increase and enhance the woodwind quintet repertoire. She has also collaborated with some of today’s most influential chamber music ensembles, including Alarm Will Sound, the Antara Ensemble and Camerata Pacifica.

Hosted by the Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre, and Dance

Description:

Kenopsia is a word, coined by John Koening, from the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It describes "the eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that is usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet." This theme served as a starting point for a devised piece created collaboratively with the cast and designers. Through a process of improvisation and collaboration, performers have created characters and content drawn from archetypal imagery and their own imaginations.
