A Community Conversation Facilitated by President Cruz
3:30 PM

Every spring, Lehman College holds its Commencement. We celebrate the achievement of all of the individuals who have earned degrees that year. It is an auspicious event not only for our graduates but also for their spouses, children, grandchildren, and parents who are acutely aware of how much it took to get to the finish line. Many of our students never get there. The latest CUNY Performance Management Plan (PNP) Data Book indicates that students who entered the College in 2011 as full-time freshmen had a 20.5% four-year graduation rate. Full-time transfers had a 54% four-year graduation rate. Even when we account for six-year rates, we find that too many of our students are still fighting to meet their full potential or have seen their dreams delayed due to reasons outside of their control. President Cruz heard from us that we are awestruck by our students’ resilience and willingness to work hard to overcome personal and academic challenges. We are, therefore, supportive of his high-level priority to “redouble our efforts to increase graduation rates, narrow achievement gaps, and reduce the amount of time it takes our students to graduate.”

Join us on Monday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. for the first of several conversations about how campus communities can scale student success efforts, accelerate student progression toward a degree, and enhance the quality of their academic programs. President Cruz will discuss the role that actionable data play in increasing every student’s chance of maximizing his or her potential. He will describe student success strategies that yielded positive outcomes at Cal State Fullerton and will provide images — from leading institutions across the country— of what it means for a campus community to be intentional, collaborative, and strategic even in the face of tough budgetary conditions. The conversation will include a 60-minute presentation, followed by a 30-minute discussion. Let’s mark the first year of Lehman’s third presidency with a renewed commitment to our students.
