Second Annual Global Citizenship Gala
The Lehman College Office of Community Engagement & New Student Programs is proud to announce our 2nd Annual Global Citizenship Gala. We hope you will be able to attend in support of a program that has truly changed the lives of hundreds of students over the past 8 years! The gala will take place at the Villa Barone Manor, Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 6:00P.M. We will honor three outstanding members of our community who make a difference locally and globally. Elias Alcantara - Associate Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the White House Marlene Citron, JD - President and CEO of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation Michael Max Knobbe - Executive Director of Bronxnet Lehman L.I.F.E. (Leaders Involved for Everyone) Service-Learning opportunities are designed to raise students’ awareness of issues and needs existing in local and global communities, and to foster effective action through volunteer work. The cycle of service continues and expands as students bring their experiences back to benefit their own communities, in the Bronx and the greater New York City area. Lehman L.I.F.E. gives students from the Bronx and NYC-area the opportunity to make a difference in the world that they never thought possible. Our annual Global Citizenship Gala is an important fundraising component. Lehman L.I.F.E. students do not receive college credit or funding for their service trips, which this year will cost over $75,000 in total. We now have our biggest cohort of students ever! Fifty-five students will be spending their spring/summer break partnering with grassroots leaders in Nicaragua building homes with Bridges to Community, serving in the Dominican Republic at a school for children with disabilities and victims of human trafficking, as well as India teaching English and educating the community on public health. We will also be volunteering with undocumented migrant farm workers in Apopka, FL and to El Progreso and traveling to Honduras to build schools with Students Helping Honduras. Please consider the options listed on our gala website (http://www.lehman.edu/globalgala) when choosing to support our Second Annual Global Citizenship Gala.

The Feeling of Reading
This symposium introduces new work on a growing area of interest in literary studies: the experience of reading. Scholars of 18th and 19th century British literature will model historical, aesthetic, and psychological approaches to the reading process. Topics range from how literary form conditions readerly practice to how empirical methods shed light on the nature of aesthetic response. By bringing critical attention to the formative ways in which writers affect their readers, this event presents an occasion to examine what is distinctive about the literary as a category of experience. Sponsored by the Center for Cultural Analysis, the Nineteenth-Century Studies Group, and Natura: A Working Group on Science and Epistemology. 1:30 to 3:00 "On Reading in Bits," Nicholas Dames, Columbia University "Affective Trollope," Suzanne Keen, Washington and Lee University 3:15 to 4:45 "Realist Friction," Elaine Auyoung, Rutgers University “Measuring and Modeling the Feeling of Reading," G. Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi
One of the greatest percussion ensembles in the world, the Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi have performed in the same way for centuries, passing down traditions and techniques from father to son. The New York Times says "a constant parade of players improvised on the central drum, dancing to the rhythms, leaping or twirling drumsticks in the air or around their necks. It was all a celebration of ability, the sheer pleasure of competitive creativity, and – strikingly similar to what happens in a jazz jam session – more virtuosic than sentimental."

Reading: Breathing with Same Air with Abigail McNamee
Abigail McNamee is Professor of Child Development - and Chair of Early Childhood and Childhood Education at Lehman College. She is author of numerous academic works, as well as plays, children’s books, and poetry. Abby has always been intrigued by - and respectful of - the stories children tell. Adults sometimes don’t hear - and if heard, don’t listen carefully to - these stories, which sometimes come spontaneously, sometimes wait for the asking. Understandably, the long discord in Northern Ireland between the Protestant and Catholic communities has engendered many stories. Breathing the Same Air: Children, Schools, and Politics in Northern Ireland focuses on stories of the integrated education movement, the context in which it began and continues to develop - and an American researcher’s experience as she learned of these stories. It relates how the common goal of integrated education has brought Protestant and Catholic children together in schools to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding. Integrated schools stress commonalities – rather than what divides - these two communities.

A reception will be held on Oct. 17, from 6-8 p.m. Space Invaders, organized by guest curator Karin Bravin, features the work of eighteen artists who make use of the unique spaces at Lehman College—both inside the galleries and outside the building. Art: Space Invaders
The Lehman College Art Gallery will present Space Invaders (October 2, 2012–January 9, 2013). A reception will be held on Oct. 17, from 6-8 p.m. Space Invaders, organized by guest curator Karin Bravin, features the work of eighteen artists who make use of the unique spaces at Lehman College—both inside the galleries and outside the building. Using the walls, the ceiling, the floor, or the balcony above the atrium, works appear to grow out of the structure, hang down, wrap around, or peer out from under. Working with a specific space in mind, in this case LCAG, the space becomes the artist’s canvas. Each artist will inhabit the space differently, taking cues from the distinctive architecture.

Artists include Kim Beck, Diana Cooper, Abigail Deville, Dahlia Elsayed, Franklin Evans, Gandalf Gavan, Dewitt Godfrey, Rachel Hayes, Lisa Kellner, Nicola Lopez, Rita Macdonald, Robert Melee, Sheila Pepe, Mariah Robertson, Cordy Ryman, Carol Salmanson, Heeseop Yoon, and Halley Zien.

Breathing the Same Air: Children, Schools, and Politics in Northern Ireland
CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies Leonard Lief Library present A Reading and Discussion Breathing the Same Air: Children, Schools, and Politics in Northern Ireland Abigail McNamee Abigail McNamee is Professor of Child Development - and Chair of Early Childhood and Childhood Education at Lehman College.
