CONCERT - Henry Thacker Burleigh, a Remembrance
Guest artists Everett Suttle, tenor and Thomas Hobson Williams, piano present "Henry Thacker Burleigh, a Remembrance"

Henry Thacker "Harry" Burleigh (December 2, 1866 - September 12, 1949) was an American classical composer, arranger, and professional singer known for his baritone voice. The first black composer who was instrumental in developing characteristically American music, Burleigh made black music available to classically trained artists both by introducing them to spirituals and by arranging spirituals in a more classical form. Burleigh also introduced Antonin Dvorak to Black American music, which influenced som of Dvorak's most famous compositions and led him to say that Black music would be the basis of an American classical music.

Exhibition Celebration for Queer Love: Affection and Romance in Contemporary Art

Join the Lehman College Art Gallery at an opening for the exhibition that will be on view at the Lehman College Art Gallery from Valentine's day through April 28.

Queer Love: Affection and Romance in Contemporary Art presents paintings and photographs that illuminate both individual and universal stories of vulnerability, tenderness, and desire in the LGBTQIA community.

The exhibition, which gathers the work of almost 50 artists, opens in two New York City galleries in February 2023−Lehman College Art Gallery in the Bronx from February 14 to April 23 and La MaMa Galleria in Downtown Manhattan, from February 18 to April 6. Each venue offers works that explore the power and significance of intimate queer familial, romantic, and sexual relationships.

From cheerful, romantic expressions of love to depictions of non-traditional nuclear families, the artwork of these LGBTQIA artists highlights the bond between them as art creators, and those with whom they have the closest ties. The LGBTQIA artists often move from celebrating their love to proclaiming a place for queer people within a larger society. Lushly beautiful, their art creates a series of nuanced and reflective, but largely positive narratives, and love’s transformative impact on both the human experience and the artistic process.

Baltimore, mass incarceration, and the Black Guerilla Family:

Black Women as protectors and providers

Description

After the killing of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, MD, the Department of Justice investigated the Baltimore City Police Department and found widespread civil liberties violations. The civil liberties violations and race-based policing disparities in Black neighborhoods contributed to mass incarceration. The disparities also played a part in transforming gender roles for Black men and women in the city. As more Black men acquired criminal records, Black women took on the roles of protectors and providers. Specifically, in the wake of mass incarceration, more Black women became correctional officers at Baltimore City jails and correctional facilities assuming roles as protectors and providers. I use the work of scholars Angela Davis and Alex Vitale to analyze research interviews collected from two studies about the Baltimore Uprising of 2015. Davis’s and Vitale’s theoretical frameworks provide a lens through which we can better understand the intended and unintended harms of the Criminal Legal Systems’ impact on gender roles in Black Baltimore.

Reading with Catherine Kapphahn: Immigrant Daughter: Stories You Never Told Me

American-born Catherine knows little of her Croatian mother's early life. When Marijana dies of ovarian cancer, twenty-two-year-old Catherine finds herself cut off from the past she never really knew. As Catherine searches for clues to her mother's elusive history, she discovers that Marijana was orphaned during WWII, nearly died as a teenager, and escaped from Communist Yugoslavia to Rome, and then South America. Through travel and memory, history and imagination, Catherine resurrects the relatives she's never known. Traversing time and place, memoir and novel, this lyrical narrative explores the collective memory between mothers and daughters, and what it means to find wholeness. It is a story where a daughter gives voice to her immigrant mother's unspoken history, and in the process, heals them both.

Catherine Kapphahn is Adjunct Lecturer in the English Department at Lehman College.

Reading with Juan Jesús Payán: Los conjuros del asombro (‘Conjuring Wonder’)

In Los conjuros del asombro (‘Conjuring Wonder’), Juan Jesús Payán uncovers the programs of nationalization of the fantastic genre undertaken by Spanish writers during the Nineteenth Century. Furthermore, the author questions the power dynamics and colonial biases of Modernity that have legitimized the marginalization and invisibility of fantastic traditions, such as the Spanish one, in hegemonic literary history.
