| Public Lecture @ Lehman College: The Eye of the Needle – an overview of recent research and the archival process in Irish folkloristics. 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
"The Eye of the Needle – an overview of recent research and the archival process in Irish folkloristics.”
Public Lecture by Prof. Ríonach Uí Ógáin
Tuesday, February 10, 2015
11:00am - Room 313
Music Building
Lehman College, CUNY
Ríonach Uí Ógáin, PhD (National University of Ireland), is Director of the National Folklore Collection, University College Dublin.
This lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Languages and Literatures and the CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies. All are welcome to attend this lecture. For more information, e-mail irish.studies@lehman.cuny.edu .
Extra Info:
All lectures about the Irish language are free of charge and open to the public. We are grateful to the Irish National Lottery which makes this series possible. Also sincere thanks to the Ireland-United States Commission for Educational Exchange for coordinating such grants and the Friends of LehmanGaeilge that funded publicity for this event.
Summary of Talk:
This talk will focus on some of the main areas within the current contexts of Irish folklore and tradition. Ireland, in the early days, witnessed the collecting and ‘rescuing’ of the material and this work was seen to be paramount. Further dissemination was a challenging process for numerous reasons and was largely in the form of publications. The establishment of The Folklore of Ireland Society (1926-) was arguably one of the first steps towards recognition of both the national and international importance of the living oral tradition. Both the Institute of Irish Folklore (1930-1935) and the Irish Folklore Commission (1935-1970) received Government support. Following the disbanding of the Commission and the transfer of its holdings and staff to University College Dublin, the National Folklore Collection was established. In addition the academic subject of folklore was created. The talk will examine some of the changes that have occurred in approaches and understandings as reflected in the content of the journal Béaloideas as recent developments have allowed for deeper levels of interrogation. The archival process which has always existed in tandem with academic research has also undergone many changes of which digitization is that with the greatest impact.

| A&H Works in Progress Talk by Prof. Olivia Moy 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
“Gothic Stanzas: Female Confinement in the Romantic & Victorian Sonnet Tradition”
Reading important metasonnets by William Wordsworth, John Keats, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, this paper demonstrates how English sonnets of the nineteenth century were often cast in terms of female confinement, borrowing thematic clichés from sensation novels of Britain’s 1790s gothic mania. Close readings and literary analysis focus on the ways in which Romantic and Victorian poets reappropriated gothic tropes as poetic form. |
