Ninth Annual CUNitY Educational Summit
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

The Educational Summit is a full-day conference sponsored annually by “CUNitY,” an alliance formed by the Black Male Initiative programs at Lehman College, Hostos Community College, and Bronx Community College. The conference, while open to all, focuses on educational and social issues related to the retention of Black and Latino male college students. Participants hear a panel discussion and then meet in workshops led by CUNY faculty and staff on topics derived from the panel discussion. The keynote speaker of the educational summit is Mr. Felipe Luciano. A news reporter and anchor, poet, writer, activist, and lecturer. Felipe Luciano is one of the most dynamic Latino public figures in the United States of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His eloquence, vision, and passion for issues of social justice are extraordinary and reflect the courage of a generation that chose to organize, teach and struggle against the powerful institutions of discrimination. This two-time Emmy recipient and former WNBC-TV New York news anchor, defied adversity early in life. Luciano was born in New York City and raised in East Harlem and Brooklyn. With the support of the college readiness program, SEEK, he enrolled in the City University of New York Queens College campus, where he immediately became involved in the student activism of the 1960s.

2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Lehman College and Community Band will give its first performance of the new year with Rites of Spring, a free concert featuring both classic and modern works for wind band. This event, which is open to the public, will take place on Sunday, March 26, at 2:00p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre.

Directed by Professor Alan Hollander, the ensemble will perform standards of the wind band repertoire including Mendelssohn’s sparkling Overture for Winds, Dello Joio’s Satiric Dances inspired by a comedic play by Aristophanes, and Variations on the Happy Farmer by Jager.

Highlighted will be clarinet soloist Boris Shpitalnik, performing the hauntingly sad but beautiful theme by John Williams from the motion picture Shindler’s List. Also featured will be vocalist Brian Baker, performing a medley from the Broadway musical Man of La Mancha.

Rounding out the program will be a Star Trek-inspired work by Hokoyama entitled Beyond, two dance-inspired works: a lively suite from the Renaissance era arranged by Curnow and “Wedding Dance” from the symphonic suite Hasseneh by Jacques Press, as well as memorial piece One Life Beautiful by Julie Giroux.

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

In honor of Women's History Month, Professor Brittany O'Neal, Adjunct Assistant Professor from the Department of Africana Studies, will give a talk, entitled "I am Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: Critical Thought in the Interest of Material Equality." This presentation will engage a scholarly discussion about the strategies used to construct and execute a political movement focused on material liberation. The philosophies of Angela Davis and Fannie Lou Hamer will act as an anchor; their political platforms play a pivotal role towards garnering voices for all dehumanized people. The talk will examine the process of women's role in identity formation and resistance toward the super-exploitation of Black working-class women in the United States. It will disclose the necessary projection of unifying the working class through a democratic process of self-determination as a means for political, economic and social liberation.
